I have a s-06 smarty that I want to update to the latest software, I am running windows vista the instructions are not very clear if someone could help that would be awesome.

You need to download the newest USB app for Vista from the Smarty site and when you plug in the Smarty do NOT search for drivers.

Plug the Smarty into the USB port of your computer and answer no to any of the dialogs. Then load the USB app, select a file then send and it should work.

You may have to unplug the Smarty after plugging it in the first time and the computer recognizing it, but the next time you plug in you should be able to follow the above directions.

Do a youtube search for "smarty update" there is a video by TheMojito 35 that shows how to do updates step by step. Tried to post the link but could not figure how to do it. Shows the computer screen and click by click shows how to do the upgrade.

That's what I was trying to post. Where do you find the "commom sense tips"? I looked under my nose the only thing there was a rum and coke:-laf.

$%$(($($(($(% oh I wanting f ing start cursing!!!!!!!!! good hell does it really have to be that complicated?!?!?!??! I want to break something,

first I tried it on my vista computer it is absolutely nothing like whats in the video, if you have vista IMO the video is worthless, also don't try doing it with firefox, anyways I remembered my daughter has a laptop with windows 7 on it, I thought having the same operating system same browser etc would get the job done, uhhhhhhhh NOPE, it works great till I get to the 3 minute mark, when I try to right click extract all, I get a message saying cannon complete the compressed (zipped) folders extraction wizard. I want to pull my hair out, I have 2 computers running trying to figure this out, even with windows 7 the same as in the video, often times my screen looks nothing like in the video. do you have to be a rocket scientist to do it????

You either have a corrupted 7zip install or a corrupted smt file. Try downloading the update file again.

I use WinRAR instead of 7zip which has given me problems in the past.

Oh yeah, find a 5th grader if all else fails. :-laf

does the truck have to be returned to stock to update the smarty program?? meaning while I bang my head kick things and get really mad, do I have to have my truck running the stock program while I monkey with all this??

Yes, or you may lock it up loading new software.

it doesn't work
it doesn't work
it doesn't work

amazing there could be video on how to do something and it flat out just doesn't work, does not work. I have tried doing it on 2 computers, I have deleted it and tried again. I have followed every step imagineable one painful step at a time, it just will not work, will not work, will not work, I want to break something.

What step does not work?

its amazing how I can use the the windows 7 the same internet explorer many of the way their screen looks is different than mine, crazy, I turned off my firewall and that got me to the point where I open 7 zip I click on the file that has the actual update, I highlight it then hit extract, my screen comes up with extract to instead of copy to like the video has, and it says extract to and the same program I tried to extract. then I get an error message that says cannot open file as archive. so I manually change it to extract to the smarty file same error message, then I manually hit copy to, then it says it cannot copy onto itself. has anyone that is not a computer geek managed to pull this off???

The retired computer nerd next door has to help me and I've got XP. Whenever you figure it out it does curtail smoke and seems to rattle less.

I followed those videos to the tee and could not get it work, today I took my unit down to a computer store and they did the update. I had been running a program that was done up in the fall of '06 so it was an old program. I wanted to adjust the timing and other things like the new software does.

I set the timing to level 4, I do drive the truck at 80mph or more alot so I am hoping that extra advance will help the high speed fuel mileage.

I loaded it into my truck tonight, and went for a test drive, motor was noticeably louder but seemed to quiet down after it was good and warmed up. alot less smoke at 3/4 acceleration, trans shifted better, this was one drive but I must say. I am very happy with the update. I had to drive the truck for a couple days on the stock program, after running the smarty for so long, it sucked driving the truck, it was a dog. also looking at the gauges with the stock program, the truck seemed to be working harder, boost and EGT was up and the truck didn't really seem to be moving that much.

I see that I can adjust the torque management, in numbers 1-4 what level is default comparable to??

also there is another setting to adjust the rail pressure, what does adjusting this do??

New 5.9 Smarty program.

Default sets timing,rp and torque management to #2,a pretty good compromise. Smoke is down and timing rattle is diminished on default compared to the old program. I had removed Smarty on mine as smoke was always a problem before with my camper load. I was followed in central Ca and northern Ca on our vacation by two CHP's. I had to be very careful driving that sucker. Me,the air quality and the CHP are happier now. :)

drove the truck more today, I am really liking this latest program. very smooth. it does have some more timing rattle at higher rpm like 2200 plus. the old smarty files were the ones that would smoke pretty good, I never had a smoke problem enough that I couldn't control it plenty good for the cops if needed. also cooler temps like below 60 degrees really cut down on the smoke with the old program. hot weather in the 90s and I could really lay some smoke.

so back to my last question, what does raising the rail pressure do??

Ramp the rail pressure slightly higher and faster cuts down the smoke and it gets the power without the extra duration and timing. It pops the rail up a LOT faster than the old REVO tune at lower rpms's.

I had to look at that and check the parameters to make sure I wasn't on RP #4. I still have too much rattle in the lower rpms, especially cold, but, not sure if its TM 3 and 4 or I need to phase my CP3. Still need to play with things some more. :)
