Just got done reading this months Diesel Power magazine and they quote numbers on the Scorpion but also pretty close speculation on the new Duramax. Seems that the 2011 Cummins will be behind the pack with 650ft lbs and 350hp. Ford is 735ft lbs and Chevy is expected at 375hp and 750 ft lbs. Not trashing the cummins at all, wouldn't want any other engine just was wondering has anyone heard of them keeping it closer to the competition?

Those numbers for Furd and GM are very much inflated, where Cummins are more realistic. For instance, what good does 735/750 ft lbs of torque do when you can only achieve it at very high RPM, which is near red-line. As we all know, Cummins max torque is just above idle.

I would say Fords numbers are a little inflated or possbly the Cummins under rated. In a recent Motor Trend diesel comparison the 2011 F250 ran the same 0-60 time as the 2010 Ram 2500. The Cummins then beat it to the 1/4 running 16. 4 sec @84. 6mph vs. the Fords 16. 5 sec @ 83. 8 mph.

You might want to look at their torque and HP curves- both are now low-speed engines like the Cummins.

Agree, Ford and GM are getting the high torque at the lower RPMs with these new motors and are flatning the curve.

I love my Cummins wrapped in the Dodge. But that said, I fear that if Ram/Cummins get to far behind we will not be able to buy one. Once the general public hears to often that Ram/Cummins is in LAST place in towing, horsepower, torque, mileage, payload, etc. . that will be fewer and fewer sales. A few educated diehards does not save a company. On top of that Dodge is owned by FIAT, who took Government bailout money and Fiat/Dodge/Ram might not be around 5 years from now.

Ram/Cummins needs to fire their marketing departement. All I see is Ford and GM ads and articles.

But thats how its been for how many years? Dodge has NEVER been a big advertiser. You know you have something when word of mouth sells your product and you dont need to sink millions into ads to get your junk into the publics mind. My opinion of course.

And Dodge/Ram/Cummins/Chrysler, isn't going anywhere. They wont split Ram and Cummins. They wont drop the other makes. They'll change offerings from each brand, and maybe shuffle some names, but they aren't going to disappear from the face of the earth.

If Diesel Power mag has any inside info, then there is a sequential turbo 6. 7 Cummins in the pipeline for the Dodge pickups. It would take little time for Cummins to up the power from the 6. 7, they can do it in a heartbeat. Let the other two duke it out, then when they settle down, show the world whos the boss. Cummins is and always will be a better engine than the two V8s...

Well said 'strokeThis.

By the way, I love my Dodge and the Cummins engine, which is the best of both worlds. I don't believe that my Dodge is a Cummins wrapped in the Dodge truck.

Perhaps the powers that be at Cummins realized the the pickup HP race has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. Not that many years ago, it was a big deal for an OTR truck to have 300 HP. Wait 'till the $5/gal diesel fuel returns, then we'll see who had the right idea on HP.

HI,

Cummins is the best REGARDLESS of the power rating... ... One concern tho... In another thread they said Cummins may start making "V" type engines... In inline is the best, why go backwards?

I'll stick with the inline 4 or 6...

TDR hotrodders have proved for years that the mighty Cummins can easily be modified for more power and if done by Cummins engineers with their vast resources can be just as durable and have a service life just as long as it currently does.

I expect Cummins and Dodge will simply retune the mighty ISB6. 7 for even more power if needed to remain competitive.

Most Dodge buyers understand the superiority of the Cummins inline six as a work truck powerplant and will continue to buy it regardless of Furd or Government Motor's inflated claims.

My mild mannered C&C rated at only 305 hp in a truck weighing 10,000 lbs. runs surprisingly strong now that it has some miles on it. The well broken in 350 horse Cummins must be impressive already.

What's coming for Cummins?? Compound turbos with a low-pressure VGT, advanced EGR, Variable Valve Actuation, new flame front strategies, 7 injection events, etc...

the 6. 7L is a torque monster, I think Marco has said it'll produce 3x horsepower for torque when you start to fuel it... the 6. 7L doesn't lack anything to make power, it's just choked because of emission requirements. That's what Cummins has to work around.

I found this on allpar.com.

An eight-speed automatic is been developed within Chrysler for the Cummins diesels. The Cummins straight six diesel is limited in power to avoid powertrain damage, and can be power-raised to match the capabilities of the rest of the truck, up to 900 lb-ft.

They also said the trucks will get another refresh in 2012. maybe we'll see more power and torque then.

What do the power numbers mean for the average user anyway? Aren't you limited in what you can tow/haul anyway when you get to 26k lbs? How much is the average joe going to be pulling?

The only idiots I see trying to pull more than they are supposed to are the Furd owners, where their rear ends are dragging their engines redlining, trying to show off to other Furd owners.

One other thing... pretty much every Furd owner I have met/know all admit that the mighty Cummins is a great motor and unbeatable for towing.

And yet they buy Furds!

... they also think furd owns Cummins because that's what their idiot salesmen tell them!

I read the same thing but I tend to take things I read on Allpar with a large grain of salt... most of it is pure speculation. There are certainly some insiders that have come thru with good info but there is a lot of rampant speculation as well. I think we all know that the platform is capable of much more power than it's quoted as producing but I think emissions is more of an overriding factor than durability of the rest of the powertrain.

I'd have to agree with SNiebaum on this. What is an 8 speed auto going to do for you that the 6 speed can't? Perhaps you could pull a fiver up a mountain 2 MPH faster or get to the store 5 seconds sooner. Shortly thereafter, GM would have a 9 speed Allison, followed by Ford's 10 speed Torqueshift.
