Cummins Cowboy
Just read all of these posts. . Saw the ball joint in the Quad 4x4 site. . I have a 09 3500 4x4 now. You might have seen my old 01 with the 19. 5" Tires for towing. . I still have these. My new truck has 8000 miles on it and I am about to do my first tow to May Madness.
I sympathize with all your problems and although Dodge and ford and Chevy have their problems, most companies will make the cheapest part they can get away with. .
When I got my old '01, I saw the Exhaust manifold was a very light cast piece. Got the 3 piece manifold because it was the same as the over the road diesels. Didn't have to do it, just did it to prevent problems. . I also had to replace the U-Joints. . got better ones that were greasable. . Then had the 53 block, cracked the water jacket, rebuilt the engine, rebuilt the 5600 transmission, had the bad track bar with the ball joint. . got the 3rd gen style with the bracket conversion and the Steering stabalizer. Did this last thing as an add on to the track bar problem... latest thing was replaced the Transfer case because of stripped gear or spline. . don't know. . My truck when I sold it had only 127,000 miles.
. . In ALL of these things, happening, I never thought my Dodge was a Piece of crap. Yes there was quality issues but all in all, I loved my dodge... Hated to sell it but it was getting too expensive to fix some more upcoming repairs... . It is still running by a kid in PA. and he is building it to be a Sled puller.
Now, If my new '09 has bad ball joints that fail and Dodge won't cover it before warranty, then I will fix it and go on. ! I love Dodge, and it's engine... the engine, Despite all the smog crap is still a superior engine. It is just the computers, the DPF and stuff that cause us headaches sometimes. . not for me yet thank goodness. . only have 8000 miles on it.
I plan on changing the oil as often as it needs it. . I don't think I will ever go over 7000 miles no matter what. . So all in all, this is a fact of owning cars and trucks. . they have crap equipment and the aftermarket companies fix it. I am glad to find that Quad 4x4 site. . have already bookmarked it for future reference.
I hope my truck don't have any problems but will deal with it . . if and or when it happens. This is why we have the TDR. ! Right? This is why Robin Created it. I see you are in Riverton Utah, I am in SLC. I have a 4x4, cold weather, snow and my new 09 was perfect last winter. Hope it continues.
Like I said i Sympathize with your repairs and problems. So your replaced crap Ball joints may be bad again... Are you going to get that $600 set of Quality Dana, Greasable Ball joints with tools, take a sunday in your driveway for about 7 hours, fix it and go on?. . I would!! in a heartbeat!
The injectors are touted as going 100K. . OK, what if they go 150K, is it worth it to keep going? . . I'd say yes. and what if they are bad. . OK, $4,000 and go another 100K miles or more... Not bad. .
Now, see? Ford had bad engines, is this new one good? don't know. too soon to tell
Chevy is not as bad but it had problems too... Diesel made by Isuzu? Don't think so.
In my opinion, Dodge has the best engine design despite all the new emissions crap and and flash problems. and I hope for my new 09 that most if not all the problems have been worked out. If all I have is ball joint problems and /or U-joint replacement, I will count myself lucky. . EVEN if they do go out every 45K! I already have upgraded the 68RFE pan with a mag-Hytec pan to help it keep cool. So it has started.
Cummins Cowboy, Please, I know a lot of the guys here think you are whining and I know they sympathize with your problems too. I do.
The real thing is to find out if fixing your truck and not having a payment even if it is $4000 to get new injectors and ball joints, is better than getting a new truck with warranty for 5 years. My choice was getting a new truck as I could not afford the necc. repairs coming up. . maybe that is your way to go as well. .
If you get a Dodge, you will have to comply with 2010 emissions. . your truck now, does not. . the new Ford is unproven. . hope it is good for the companies sake, but I would not want to take that chance yet no matter what the incentive.
I got $8000 trade, $8000 rebate I bought last year in Sept. , I also got a $400 tax deduct for getting a new vehicle... and I had taken some money out of retirement to pay about half the truck off to reduce the payment. . Didn't need to, just did. . I only owe $18500 now. So if there is repairs in the future, so be it.
Hope this defuses some of the tension out there. This is why we have the TDR so that we can brag, yes, and if there are problems, to find a way to repair them. . not B**** about them. Am I right guys?
