Replaced original pump at 90K miles before problems started (bought it through Geno's). At 120K it failed. Dodge dealer convinced us to go with the in-tank pump since "they experienced so many failures with external pumps. " Our extended warranty paid only the cost of the external pump--we paid the balance. Since new pump was installed our fuel gauge is not functioning properly. Dealer installed a second new pump--that didn't help. Their solution: 1) Live with it (not acceptable to us!); 2) Pay for parts for a new external pump and in-tank sending unit (they discarded our old, working one). Our warranty won't pay a second time and this suggested fix will cost us around $500. The gauge is nearly one-half tank off of the correct reading. Any help out there? #@$%!

I have a neighbor who had this problem... .

they put 3 pumps in under warranty to fix his gauge. . and as I remember it was the connection (ground) where to old pump came off... and they connected into the wiring harness to run the cable back to the tank...

His unit would stop reading fuel at about 1/3 of a tank... he's on vacation, 1 week into something like a month, he's retired or I'd ask... but I'm sure it was a loose connection at the engine... and as I remember a ground wire...

Why would one replace fuel pumps to fix a fuel gauge problem ? It is a gauge, sender or wire/connection problem.

Those In-tank pumps fail just like any pump Does,Why Dodge subject it customers form a simple 20 minute change that can be done at almost any safe area is beyond Me,all the bad rap that filter mounted pump received was shocking to say the least. He's an option. https://www.turbodieselregister.com...2003-2007/211979-dual-factory-lift-pumps.html After Dodge heck butchers Your Side mounted Pump (wires, hanging relay with zip tie, flash,Module) its much more difficult to install the Dual Kit.

What exactly is wrong with the gauge? Does it stay on full too long, not go to empty, you say it reads 1/2 off from what it should, some more detail please. If you give us the symptoms perhaps we can help with a simple repair.

We've done the testing at half a tank. Usually would have 17 gallons, or close, at 1/2. Now at 1/2 we have 12. He's run it through several tanks. It is now a moot point. The best diesel mechanic around just came back to work for him--he's an old Cummins guy. He had the same problem in his 2004--and he is living with it, like we are. Pretty crappy way to solve a problem, but the Chrysler Service doesn't have an answer.
