Chrysler & Cummins Restart Light Duty Diesel

See the link to PickupTrucks.com for the story. It sounds promising. I think it would be a coup for Chrysler if they offered a5. 0L light duty diesel in the 1500/2500/3500 trucks.

That would be me. In the 10 years I've had my 99, the biggest load I have carried was a small slide-in camper (1000lbs dry) towing my Wrangler. A smaller diesel in a 3/4 truck would be great for me.



Maybe they would put it in the Power Wagon? Then I'd upgrade for sure.

Cummins parted ways with Fiat in Europe for good reason. Marchionne was
"borrowing" a bit too much of Cummins technology in their joint venture. Maybe
it was the mob mentality in Italy. I'll believe it when I see it. Dodge heavy duty
pickup sales would drop 90% if they came with an Italian engine. That's the
biggest ace that Cummins is holding. I wish Cummins the best with this bunch.

Two years ago I traded in my '04 CTD for a new 1500. Since I intended to trade that in on a new 1500 diesel when available, it was a major disappointment to find out there wasn't going to be one. I hope this does come to fruition. A heavy/half ton with a 5. 0 and 25 mpg would be a nice truck.

I would like to see them come out with a mini truck with a small 4 banger diesel.

The Mahindra should be available in April- just waiting for final EPA approval. Small 4X4 with 6-speed auto claims 30MPG on the road. Let's see how fast the big three scramble if this is a success. Later in the year a small diesel SUV will be available.

My 99 Ram 3500 with 265,000 miles is thinking about retiring. It will keep going until a 1500 small block diesel becomes available. Meanwhile, I'll keep saving a few $$ each month for when the pump fails.

I like the idea, but I would rather see them use the 4. 5L in a Dakota. We do not need another high horsepower, high torque engine. We need a fuel efficient diesel choice. I like what I have read about the Mahindra truck, but why no manual transmission choice?

TURIN -- Fiat S. p. A. will keep its core auto operations within its holding company and demerge its truck and tractor divisions into a new public company to be called Fiat Industrial S. p. A.



Fiat announced today its namesake Fiat brand, along with Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Ferrari and Maserati, and its light commercial vehicle division, will remain part Fiat S. p. A. 's 111-year-old holding company.



Also, the portion of Fiat Powertrain Technologies that makes engines and transmissions for Fiat vehicles will remain within Fiat S. p. A. to complement the automotive operations.



Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said the spinoff should be completed by the end of the year.



Reports on Tuesday had said that Fiat would spin off its autos business to allow Marchionne an entity to facilitate future alliances and launch a share sale to generate cash to expand, a move advocated and expected by financial analysts.



But Marchionne's announcement today that he will go in the opposite direction will give markets an easy, clean way to re-rate Fiat's non-automotive business as an independent listed company.



Fiat S. p. A. also owns the Fiat trademark, so keeping autos and instead spinning off the group's Iveco trucks and Case New Holland tractor units will keep the trademark where it is actually used.

Move to just about any other country in the world. They've had them for ages. My friend was in Nicaraqua recently and rented a new Toyoa Hilux diesel w/manual transmission and a/c. He's not a diesel guy but loved that truck.

I hate to say it, but a diesel engine in any truck smaller than class 6 is getting too costly as an option and does not have the operating economics to justify them.



yes, gas may go to $4/gal but diesel will most likely be $5/gal.



In most light duty (1500-3500) gas engine trucks, mileage has been continuously increasing, while diesel engine mileage is continuously DECREASING.



What is the point of getting a diesel unless you drive over 50,000 miles a year and plan on putting over 300,000 miles on your vehicle before trade-in.



you can thank the EPA and the federal government for the destruction of the light/medium diesel truck market.



Urea injection is actually a good idea (used widely in Europe) with justifiable cost however the DPF became the default selection for most manufacturers in the USA and they cost much more to operate and reduce mileage significantly.



hang on to what you have. it's not getting better. My 04. 0 gets an overall average ~20 mpg. haven't seen anyone report this high a mileage with anything newer than 07.

Not true. Even with all the anti pollution crap required by the government, mama's 2010 Volkswagen Jetta gets 45 mpg. A little truck with a similar engine would easily get 35+ mpg. The diesel engine option on the worldwide produced vehicles is a minimal added cost. Produce a diesel engine vehicle that can be marketed around the world and you have a cost effective real world winner. I do not understand why our only diesel choices are in little cars or full size trucks here. Bring us some SUVs and small trucks... and a damn WRANGLER with a diesel and the people WILL buy it!!

I have been hearing that for years, yet still no pickup available. Kinda sad that their little diesel will not get any better fuel economy than my Jeep Liberty on the highway. I wish they would offer a manual transmission in the damn thing too. That would help fuel economy.
