Engine dies when cold and idling

My truck recently began to stall when the engine is cold and idling. I changed the lift pump since the truck has 59,000 miles--didn't solve the problem.

I just used the key method to check codes and I'm throwing P0514 and P2509which are battery temp and ECM/PCM power input. The batteries are only 2. 5years old, and they indicate 100% charge with battery charger... so could the batteries need replacing? I have a hunch the grid heaters come on and kill the engine at times. Any ideas on what else to look at?

i have old batteries but i have never kild my engine with load and i have used it to light up all 14 55watt bulbs when cold once (headlights foglights and 10 worklights) ecm powerinput doesent sound good it needs stable voltage to operate good

try putting a large battery charger on one morning and se what happens

Try using an anolog volt meter and watch the needle. Much faster to read vs. digital

I'd clea up all connections on the cables, even if they look OK. Then clean up all the smaler wires connected to them also, especially the ones off the drivers side battery . Had a friend that had something similar going on recently.

You could disconnect the wire to the grid heater to test your theory.

I replaced my batteries and the situation is much better, but I've definitely got something wrong that basic maintenance doesn't appear to solve. Engine will now hesitate when cold vice die. Scheduled to take to the dealer tomorrow.

If all the battery cables (+ and -) are clean and tight on all ends, all grounds good, PDC lug clean and tight, have them load test the grid heaters. I ran into one the other day that was drawing 220 amps when the heaters cycled on. Battery voltage was dropping low enough the reset the ECM.

The solution to my problem was a new ignition switch... who would have thought that!!

Problem not fixed. Took the truck back to the dealer this morning. Throwing codes P0581 and P2509. I think I've got an electrical short of some sort.

Still willing to say you have a bad/ dirty connection somewhere... more then likely on the drivers side battery. Have you disconnected the smaller leads and clean them all individually ? Someone on another site just went through something similar along with a buddy of mine here in town. Turned out to be a overlooked connection that was all dirty and nasty.

Including the smaller wires coming off the big cables ? How about where the ground cables attach to the block on both sides ?

True problem was the ECM was failing intermitently. . Not a warrantee item either. Ouch!

Yep,, thats what the ******* told the last two customers we had with the same Problem,Both vehicles had poor connections, We install NEW batteries, Alternator with New charging cable install to Drivers Side Battery,Yep additional charging cable from alternator to Drivers side Battery,The charging system on 03 /07 dodge Cummins is poorly design. Both customers went back to the factory ECM and are now taking action to recover the $2200. 00 they were charged. 99% Of all dealer techs are trained for warranty work and are puppets from Chrysler knowledge,ALL base on warranty repair. Why what new vehicle would have poor connections or poorly designed,thats the depths of the *******'s Knowledge.



The New ECM work for period of time,but fail also, Both *******'s blame the second failure on the vehicles,1 the snow plow,the other the the aftermarket stereo, When ECMs fail other problems develop,this includes and not limited to truck dieing,lights,horn,IC,wiper and other intermittent problems.
