I Should have asked first but was not even thinkin 130. 00 I think ill call the smog people and report this guy! $45 sounds at least reasonable for what little they do!

I definetley will shop around next time if I dont reg it in Oregon.

Every single smog station I have ever seen has the prices posted clearly. In fact I believe it is the law. Most of the metro dealers are at least $100 plus the certificate, but many smog shops are in the $40-80 range.

Yup, your smog tech broke it off in your arse for sure!

Want to re-open this a tad. I'm registered in Tennessee but had to smog today to get my new base decal (long story). Anyhow, i returned Smarty to stock, took it in and he failed it because it wouldn't connect to the techs computer. Anyone had this problem? I've smogged my 99 for the same thing, turned smarty to stock, passed no problem. I'm bummed out because i paid to put the cat back on and now this. Is it his computer or my truck? Thanks in advance for any input.

It's the tech doing the inspection. I believe 06 is the first year that the trucks are required to communicate with his computer via the CAN Bus. The older trucks should only have a visual inspection.

Try to find a place that will pass or don't pay. When I got mine done I just pulled in and told the tech my concerns about not connecting and he said lets hook it up and see what it does. No communication but I passed. Some techs just don't understand the rules for different MY trucks.

Your ECM is under warranty

JKreiss, Dodge just issued a TSB for this very reason for the 2004 to 2005 trucks. Here is a link to the thread that someone posted about this issue. It looks like you MIGHT just need a NEW ecm paid for by Dodge under warranty. Look at the first post and then call your dealer--

Tell the tech to show you in his manual what he is supposed to be checking . Sometimes they think they know it all the kind of people we don't want as operators running the control room in a nuclear power plant

The sad part is their is no work involved no dyno. Go figure

Thank you for all the help. I got the letter in the mail, i honestly didn't think it applied to me but i suppose it's definitely worth looking into. I paid $30 for the smog, he's kind of a looney toon but he means well. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see what he says. Honestly i don't think he's too knowledgeable about the diesel smog requirements. I had to argue with him about my 99' not having a cat for a while until he finally got the book out, might have to make him get the book out again. I think i'm just most upset about the state and their money grab, even on non-resident military, with out of state registered vehicles. Anyhow i'll talk to the shop and look into that recall. Thanks guys

Yeah honestly that's all it is. It's just he panicked when he plugged it into the EIS and he failed it. He tried starting it up/shutting it off, it still wouldn't connect. From the reading i've done, and like WoodChuck said, it states that "some diesel powered vehicles cannot communicate with EIS due to CAN Protocol OBD-2 systems". Now where it states which ones will or wont, or where it says that in his book i don't know. I also really don't want to go to the dealer and mess with that ECM deal. I DO NOT like the local one and would just as soon stay away from there. I'm wondering if i finally got around to updating my Smarty if the new stock software would fix this? I've got the original programming and honestly wouldn't hurt to get with the times i guess.

Where are you at JKreiss? If it doesn't work out and you're in the the Sac area I can send you to a guy who will take care of it. He did mine just a few months ago, knows exactly what to do. He's very pro-2A as well... .

Hey scootergmc, i'm in Fairfield but i'm up and down 80/50/and 12 it seems like all the time so no place is too far. If you know a good shop that'd be great, like i said i don't need it to get the tags i just have to smog it for my base decal. I'm going to call the guy this morning because i have a free retest but i just wish i had the literature that says my truck won't necessarily talk to his computer. Thank you I appreciate it.

JKreiss, why don't you go by the dealer service dept. first, explain the situation and see if they can give you a copy of the letter that they are sending out to owners of these trucks...

Hey seafish,

Yeah i called this morning and they were completely clueless. Like i said we don't have a good dealer here, i've been taken for a ride from them a few times in the past. At any rate they are supposed to be "looking into it" and are going to be calling me back. I'll see what they have to say, i'd rather them not take my truck so i'm seeing what options I have available. If i can find a guy that can just pop the hood, peek around and send me on my way i'd be happy. I have a stock truck so there shouldn't be any issues. Thanks again though I appreciate all the help.

Ooops... just read that you already have a copy of the letter.

Good Luck. . let us know what happens.

Well first off let me say thank you to all the help from everybody. Big thanks to scootergmc! I wish I had something technical to share or some form of enlightenment, but when I took it back to the shop he hooked it up and it communicated fine and passed no problem. My truck honestly has her own personality and I think she was ticked off that she had to wear her cat again:-laf Seriously though in the last 48hrs. I've learned a bunch about the smog laws of this state and for all of those who haven't yet had to smog, it pays to be well informed before going in there. Thanks again everybody.
