i had a knock in my 03 turned out to be a stick injector the needle inside the tip had some bad scuff marks on it the knock would go away with winter fuel or lots of fuel addative my thinking (and this could be wrong) was that it was missing the pilot injection shot so i was getting a good fuel knock like on the older motors when i pulled the injectors all were clean except that one it had lots of carbon on it replaced that tip and my knock had gone away hope its that simple for you

I wonder if not changing the Fuel Filter often enough would cause this problem. It seems that when the filter is not changed way before the manufacture suggested 15,000 miles, that people have problems with the injectors. I have started doing the filter changes at 5,000 miles, since I had to change the injectors not long ago. My problem was poor idle in Park. It was fine in all the other gear selections. Dodge told me to run some injector cleaner in fuel to correct the peoblem, this did nothing. I did however get a bit better fuel mileage. Dodge ended up changing out the injectors, problem gone! I have been considering installing a XX-Fuel system, atleast there Fuel Separator, working along with the factory filter.

There seems to be two different schools of though on fuel filter intervals... One is to change it sooner than recomended (thats what I do)

Others live by the rule that by allowing it to run to 15k, the filter loading actually provides better filtration. .

One thing I HATE to see happen is for people to fill the filter with unfiltered fuel and/or not drain the filter housing before replacing the element. .

I alway drain the Fuel Fitler housing before removing the filter. I don't add unfiltered fuel to the housing... I agree that would not be a good idea. I often drain the filter in between filter changes, especially when it has been colder or wet outside. Of course that doesn't happen much here, I am in Arizona for the winter!:-laf

I was very surprised how easy the connector tube and injector came out.

I do not see any obvoius issues with the injector (tip is still there and now visable cracks in the body).

I also dont see the holes in the tip. Are they microscopic or something?

The borescope is just a hair too large to get all the way down into the motor #@$%!.

Hello

Cannot help but respond to this as I had a similar 'knock' develope coming out of Charleston, SC a few years ago. Just continued to get louder. Took it to a Cummins shop and narrowed it down to Cyl #4. Long story short, it finally turned out to be the oil cooling nozzle had broken off. I had about 100,000 on it at the time. I will not bore you with the quite lengthy story but wound up having to get a long block down in NM. I just got rid of the truck last month with 165,000 miles. Still like that truck. Hope you have better luck than I did.

You can see them if you have good eyesight, although they are very small. You may have to wipe the tip off a little to clean soot, etc and then hold up the a light. A crack in the nozzle will likely not be detectable simply by looking at it... especially when a crack could be even smaller than the holes themselves.

Ahhhh - thanks for the info.

Well, I replaced the injector - no difference.

I bought a mechanics stethescope. I have probled all over the motor and everything sounds just fine EXCEPT the block on the passenger side under the exhaust manifold. If I place the stethescope on that freezplug, it sounds like the is someone on the other side of it with a hammer.

The cylinder head, bellhousing, trans etc are all fine. #@$%!

Check your valve lash. Look for a rocker (likely on the ex side) that is too tight or too loose (likely too loose). If you have one at . 030" or more you found your problem.
