Cummins stock price and Fleetguard fuel filter availability

Wingate,

This is going to be one of the longest running and most entertaining threads in the history of TDR.

We didn't have a direct source of information regarding the Sick. Ohh Furds back when they were fairly new and used heavily by folks trying to tow their trailers.

HAHAHAHA... . !!!!!. . Been trying to keep the info. as impartial as possible. . Sometimes, there is some aggrevation with the info... If you've ever had to unload a brand new service truck and try and stuff it all in a wore out, much smaller, retired truck... all while sitting in the back of a dealership lot with my customer calling wondering when I will be on location... etc. . ..... it tends to bring out some stress. But, I have been fortunate, the dealership that I have been using for this truck has been doing a great job. (knock on wood!!) I had actually started using them on my wifes' Jeep GC after the local Dodge dealer left the right rear wheel loose and the air cleaner lid off during a P/M!!.

I have been MUCH more fortunate than the guy driving the other truck. (the one with the new engine) He was forced (by circumstance) to use a dealership that we would never use otherwise. And now, until the new engine issues are resolved, there's not another dealer that would touch it with asbestos gloves and a welding hood!!. . And I don't blame them.

The truck itself is far superior to the GM product that we moved from. The overall quality of the truck is light years ahead. What is sad is the early failures (which I HOPE are just related to early production components) and even worse is the HORRIBLE fuel economy. As much as people don't want to believe, these trucks are only getting 6+ MPG!. I have actually been limiting my idle time to zero, no idle time unless the PTO is engaged and using the crane or compressor. Just came in from making a 350 mile round trip today, it got 6. 5mpg today.

When I ordered my '03 as a LICROC member, the GM of the dealership and I sat down at the DC computer and went through all the options when ordering the truck. He knew absolutely everything about these trucks. Never had to look for a answer to any question.

From what I understand, the turbo was NOT replaced with the long-block!!. . seems like a really poor decision to me, but I'm not the one working on it. Maybe they inspected it and did not see anything wrong??? Who knows... .

Its funny that you mention that about salesmen... the day I test drove that one, I questioned him about towing capacity and to explain exactly how the 4x4 worked and he immediately went for the sales brochure... He couldn't find the answers there, so he got on Fords web-site and funbled around there for several minutes. His FINAL conclusion was that the 4x4 DOES work, and that it towed "a bunch!". . I just laughed and agreed with him, then walked away... . BUT, thats not just a FORD thing... last DECENT salesman I dealt with was at the Honda dealership in Longview.....

I was quizzed by the service advisor about my fuel economy when i picked up my truck. He is getting raked over the coals by another customer that purchased an F550 C&C from them. Customer has already been back twice and getting kinda upset about it. I know the guy he was referring to, he lives about 2 miles from me and is a local hay producer. From what the S/A said, he (his customer) said the truck started out getting decent fuel economy, but is steadily dropping and is now down to roughly 8mpg!!!. . I asked that if they find out any info on getting the fuel economy up on the F550's, that we would need to investigate doing the same to mine.
Gotta love small town life. That local hay producer wouldnt drive a red truck, and be named terry would it. . ? I havent spoke with him since he bought it in december, but intended to call and quizz him about it. . He works the snot out of one, and believe it or not had pretty good luck out of his two 6. 0's. As to your buddy's work truck, i thought that odd myself about the turbo not being addressed. . Crossed my mind something from it may have created the valve issue on the orig engine. . Found out yesterday, one of my friend's was the wrecker driver that hauled it to s'port for y'all early this week. . The look on his face when i told him i allready knew about that trucks issues was priceless!

... or the other way around. A piece of valve material may have gone through the turbo. I think I would have at least looked if I were the servicing dealer.

Yep, thats him... It will be interesting to hear what they come up with for an answer to his poor fuel economy complaint. Hopefully, it doesn't start with "being worked too hard and end with being idled too much!!. . " Really, he doesn't work them any harder that most guys do to a 1ton. About the biggest thing he pulls is the JD... granted, thats a load, but for a 550, it should do that with ease... I'm just glad to hear that others are complaining about the F/E of the truck. Maybe something can get done about it if enough people throw a shoe...

Can you IMAGINE what a round bale will cost if fuel goes to $5. 00 a gallon and his truck is going thru it like a bar-fly at MardiGras??? Throw in the idea of a dry spring... . and I will be giving away horses really quick!!

Terry's average loads are why he bumped up to a 550 about 6 years ago. He ran those same 10 to 15 ton trailers on f350's and briefly one 3500 dodge for many years. The catch here is, it's a year round thing for folks like he and i. Not to mention the hired help driveing them factor[ especially his] In the end, it's still no excuse for a 6/8 mpg average. Geeze i have a couple 2 ton single axle dumps with better mpgs then that. One of them is a big block gasser! As to those horses, i have allready seen people giving stock like horses, mules and donkeys away. With parts of our state allready in a drought again, and our local rainfall a bit behind also, it aint looking good!

That fuel mileage is simply unacceptable. Our septic pumping trucks spend half their time idling at 1000 rpm while spinning a 40 hp vacuum pump. The other half of the time, they are driving in rural areas, stop and go traffic, and no highway time and they ALL give us 5. 5-6. 9 mpg consistently. If I have to take one of these trucks on a road trip, they ALWAYS provide a minimum of 10 mpg ( all hand calculated). And these are huge, tandem axle trucks with a GVWR of 52,000 to 64,000.
Our portable toilet division is comprised of mostly Isuzus, with a 24 valve Dodge, and a 5500 GMC in the mix. As you can imagine, they are all stop and go trucks, while idling and running vacuum pumps off the pto. Almost no highway time, and they provide a minimum of 8. 5 mpg, and sometimes 10 mpg.
All trucks have plenty power. Even the potty truck Isuzus that only have a 5. 2 Isuzu or 4. 8 Isuzu motor (4 cylinder, 190-205 hp) and have more than enough power to do their job, and they weigh 12,500 to 15,000 lbs empty, and 2,000-3,000 lbs heavier when full of "product".
I just don't know why your trucks only give 6 mpg doing what they do. I would FREAK!!

. I would FREAK!!

Trust me, our fleet manager is!!!. . still hoping that some tweaking of the fuel map can help it. . With as many miles as we log in a week, the difference between 6-7 and 10 adds up to a BUNCH of $$$$$. . it gets compounded by $4. 00 and $5. 00 per gallon diesel.

So he's is the guy that bent the front bumper up on it? Or did he leave that part out?? If he left it out, ask him and see what he says!!. . I swear that truck is cursed!!!. . :-laf:-laf

No,he told me about the bumper, said it should be a easy fix? He let the owner know about the issue also, he's typicaly ok to deal with. Dont know if you remember the bad accident that killed 3 on I-20 2 years ago, it was this guys dad. While on a wrecker call, an 18 wheeler left the road and wiped the whole show out. The guy's dad, 2 of the 3 stranded motorist, the disabled vehicle, and the wrecker. One of the most gruesome accidents i have ever seen, and that was just pictures.

Well, truck is still in the shop for the turbo. I hear they may have it ready mid next week. Funny thing is I can change a 700 lb. turbo thats up two catwalks in about 5 hours... . anyway... its still broke.

Another guy took his truck to another local dealer today to get it serviced... . They had two trucks in there and were being stumped by the transmissions "flairing"... . Apparently this is a common issue among these transmissions that is being compounded by there being two different root causes. One of which being an apparently corrupt software patch that while appearing to have loaded, does not fully load all the lines of code onto the truck system. . and the other being some early production pressure solenoids... . gotta love "progress" sometimes.

GIGIBAC stands for Gee Im Glad I Bought A Cummins

have you seen the t-shirts that say... DILLIGAF...

truck is suppose to be back tomorrow. . really hoping that all this drama is over. it really kills us when one of these trucks go down. We currently have two spares, but they are being drug up out of the pasture and put back to full time use for two "FNG's" ... so future breakdowns will REALLY kill us.
