you have an xcase temp gauge? I thought about it, but decided against it, I cant imagine anytime when the xcase would be hotter than the transmission.

After a good week end in the sand dunes look at the discoloration of the ATF in the xfer case... ... ... ... . it gets plenty hot. Not many use a diesel out there but some of us do :-laf

Yeah I would image lots of time in 4wd at slower speeds would affect it. And I have been known to spend some time in 4wd in my other rigs. My xcase will be getting Amsoil ATF in the next couple months which should help with the heat dispersion and heat tolerance. But if the xcase was that hot, I would hate to see how hot the manual transmission was.

Anyone use just one fast cooler? I will change my fluid tonight and my freind gave me his (off an old NV4500) he wants to use one on the Dr side of his 05 NV5600, so he said I could have the other, otherwise I can use both (buy them from him). My 1st question is how good is the cooling on the Pass side with the exhaust right there. Second , will one on the dr side actually do anything, I will put a sending unit and fill plug to add the xtra qt, or do I need both to get the effect?

I forgot to mention, I am working my way through the fluid changes, I added Amsoil ATF to the T-case, PS and will put in MTF tonight, then Mag-Hytec and front / rear diffs next month, I tow a 11k 5-er 4~5 times a yr, otherwise just general purpose use. Future plans will be TST or Smarty, gauges, etc, etc, only had her since July and so I have many things to do to make her mine. :-laf

I just want to do whats best while I am in the TM right now, I decided to change the fluid because the shifting has become alittle stiffer these past weeks, and its due.

Adding oil volum is a good thing

I use header wrap on the pipe to negate

It's effects from it

I just wrapped my downpipe last month, so far it seems like its made a difference in the trans temp (no gauge, just touching it). I do a lot of slow speed towing where EGT's can be up to 1000° on some back roads at 25-30 mph.

So it sounds like I should just put both on and give my friend the money for them, I replaced the stock 3. 5" with a 4" Silverline turbo back system, flows pretty good, I dont know about heat, just have read that it may be close on the 3rd gens with a 5600.

What wrap did you put on the pipe? I had some cloth oldschool stuff on my chevelle.

Also I plan to put in gauges (eventually), but dont want a lot, so can you get additional sending units for the Oil temp gauge? I was going to put one and have it switch between the tm and rear diff, maybe transfercase with a toggle.

I have the G56 with coolers that I put on after the trans temp gauge and very glad that I did. Before the coolers the transmission would get up to 180 emty with ambient of 80 degrees. I pulled 6K gross HiLow over South Pass when the ambient was close to 100 and the trans temp went over 220.

I know have a 5th wheel that has a gross of 11K and I have pulled it into the wind with ambients near 100 and the temps do not get above 180.

I am very happy that I installed the coolers on the G56 they increase the volume of oil and reduce the temp.

MMeier What do you do with your truck?

Pull my toys around of course:rolleyes: This is why I use the Fast Coolers

Mundgyver are those tanks empty and not have any HAZMAT products left in them. Im not sure but I think they are to be braced when laying flat. Sorry just looking at going to work at the scales in MT as an inspector for big rigs. If tanks are empty need a cert. that says they have been purged of all vapors. Ill stop now and mind my own business :-laf

OK TM gurus, quick question... .

I went to install the Fast Coolers I bought from Genos yesterday and they dont fit, looked at the old ones ( a freind has) and mine are 20mm deeper, soo I cant get it past the down pipe. (other style has a 10mm clearnance)

I bought the exhaust wrap (AH64ID reccomended) and was going to wrap the pipe, (probably easier to wrap before installing the coolers?) but was wondering about milling down the cooler to clear the pipe.

How close to the down pipe are you guy running? Scott from genos said these coolers are "blumenthal" dont look the same but they are alum so easy to modify.

thoughts?

Back when the fast coolers first hit the market, the guy made them in two lengths, about a 1/2 or 3/4"(or so) different. While I don't remember which one was longer, one was for the five speed and one for the six speed. He sold me one of each size, I put the shorter one on the exhaust side. You could always have it milled or contact Fast coolers direct and if he still makes both sizes, see if he would swap you out for a shorter one.

My friend has an 05 NV5600, he has the short ones, so I will see if he'll trade / swap with me as his are not installed yet. should have ~ 1/4 clearance to the down pipe with the short one installed, otherwise I have a mill, just takes the time.

I have more than on with 4500 standard so I got one kit and split it and then put the filter on the other side. Kinda like the filter idea and also the fast cooler also. When I change oil now, the oil I drain out looks like I should run it a little longer.
