Gary,

Looks like a speed bump on your way to 1,000,000 miles with this chassis. Maybe you could but sillouetes (sp?) of old transmissions on the door like a fighter planes would and an exterior LED display showing the truck's mileage as you roll along.

Gary

It is surprising it still ran as good as it did. Worn out valves are further evidence that you got about all the service life out of the original engine it had to offer.

I had to chuckle at this one. When I was stationed in Korea the last time I had a Korean built Ford for a daily dirver. It was a true beater. It was painted with the IR paint the Army used for their helicopters and had three yellow bumblebee stripes like the medivac Hueys we flew. It sported the "tail number" of Dustoff 001 and on the fender I had little emblems of the objects I had minor conflicts with, i. e. a rickshaw, a taxi, etc. The maintenance officer that I replaced sold it to me for a case of beer. Unfortunately I had a run in with a bus about a month before I left and the bus won. :-laf

Gary, I'm sure you can have seats installed in these heads. Smitty

I hope so. I have contacted Andy Redmond about doing the rebuild. My garage isn't equipped for rebuilding an engine that is made up with heavy components that I can't lift (like the head). With the TX heat I'm in no rush to do another engine swap so we are going to try to get together next month. If the head isn't repairable... ... . oh well. It isn't like I didn't get my moneys worth out of this one. :D

The engine oil cooler and the hole it goes into. Definitely good payback for flushing and replacing the coolant ever 36 to 50k. BTW, I still have the original heater core.

I'll drop a main bearing or two today. The crank looks good under the rod bearings that I took off.

I strongly beleive in good coolant maintenance!

Thanks for all the pics.

+1.

I do my flush annually. Maybe a bit too extreme since I havent been driving it much lately.

After seeing a few radiators out of the truck, I may pull mine this spring to giver her a good washing. I've used a screen in front of it from day 1, but that dont do everything.

So do you think the valves surfaces were a cause for oil loss?

My brother was a diesel technician for years, he has rebuilt some equipment around his ranch like a JD tractor and a Case dozer. I have a lot of admiration for folks who can not only repair but actually improve equipment knowing the best techniques and processes.

He bought a IH flatbed at a Air force auction to haul his dozer. Apparently the man that rebuilt the engine used the wrong process for putting the pistons in as he was used to gas engine rebuilding. THe new engine was ruined in a few thousand miles and the entire block was useless. Some how he was able to find a deal on another engine and got it back into service.

Good luck with which ever way you go GAmes.

No, if anything the increased surface area was in my favor (I think). I pulled a couple of main bearing caps today and found just a slight bit of wear on the inserts. Nothing worth taking a picture of. I also measured the gap of the rings (second picture in post #1 is the top ring, and post #17 is the oil ring), and they are definitely out of spec. The top ring min is . 016 in, max is . 0275 The one I measured is . 033 The intermediate and oil rings min is . 010, max . 0215. Mine are . 032 I'm not an expert, but that probably accounts for the blowby and oil usage:-laf

Yep, that's been my experience with high mileage 10 and 14 liter Cummins engines with a million miles plus on them and it's usually why they wouldn't pass the Cummins crankcase (blow-by) pressure test.

This makes me feel pretty good about mine with about 420k Miles on it.

Still no oil consumption between oil changes, just changed it at 6,000 miles.

It was maybe a 1/2 quart lower than when I changed it 6,000 miles ago.

Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.
