What aux cooler works well with a 92 5. 9/intercooled/automatic? I pull a heavy load and wonder if a remote cooler with fan is required. Specific type is appreciated as I am real new to this. Btw, my 92 has 118,000 original miles on it.

I removed the OEM under-the-bed cooler assy from another truck and instaled that. I didn't save the hose of course... ... ... .

I did modify it to use a manual switch as opposed to the in cooler temp sensor. I didn't know what the sensor was set to and I have a temp gauge so I can control the fan on/off via a switch and fender mounted relay.

The OE fan and cooler is mounted ahead of the left rear wheel well, to the cross members of the truck bed.

If you can't locate a take-off or used one, then perhaps Summit would have something to fir your needs that has the cooling fan/radiator.

Mine is the size of a heater core with a steel box built around it and a plastic shroud on top which mounts the fan motor.

I think Derale makes one that is almost a direct replacement for the factory option. That would be my choice.

I've got an extra factory opt trans cooler w/fan and thermostat if you haven't found one. I will let it go for $50. E-mail me at -- email address removed --.

I bought the last NIB unit remaining in the US from the Dodge dealer in Braidwood, Illinois a couple of years back. I think I paid $250 plus shipping (because it was "obsolete. ") I did scan the OEM installation instructions to a .pdf file; lemme know if you need them. I have yet to install the cooler.

Unfortunately replacement parts are no longer available for the Mopar unit -- unless you get an excellent price on a used one I think the Derale or some other aftermarket cooler is a better bet.

Cheers,

At 171820 miles on 5-3-2011, I had installed: a Derale Hyper Extreme remote transmission cooler #15870, 180Deg. thermostat #15721, Winter 180deg. Bypass valve # 25792, Bypass valve mounting brkt. #25792, Parker Push-Lok fittings (8-AN size) & Parker Hi Temp Hose (Blue & Red) for $529. Labor (6. 5Hr. ) ran $568. They (Huckstorf Diesel, Franklin, WI) welded 2 square bars on top of the transfer case skid plate, with tapped holes to mount the cooler out of harms way. The cooler fan is positioned on top & is wired to blow down. A most professional install job.

Without 'scientific' testing data, it appears to improve temperatures at least 10 deg. I chose this hardware because it seemed to be well constructed, and the cooling "fins & tubes" seemed to be well designed for thermal transfer. Derale made no performance tests to evaluate the thermal "efficiency/effectiveness" of their product. This was most disturbing, considering that is the main criteria for a purchase of any cooler. I reported my displeasure at their lack of ability to perform even basic thermal testing for a 'thermal' product. They responded with excuses relating to ". . too many variables. . ". B. S. I thought. I gambled & took my shot at picking the best 'pig in a poke'.

The efficiency of an fluid to air cooler system is drastically impacted by air temp, the amount of water in the air, and installation location, and fluid flow rates. They are correct in stating too many variables to come up with a standard rating. They have efficiency ratings but they are based on standards for air flow, fluid flow, temp, and humidity. However, as they eluded to there are simply too many variables in play to publish a number that would be taken as an absolute.

It is definitely one of those YMMV scenarios. :)
