Decided to get rid of the ATF4 that Dodge uses to lubricate my G56 6 speed transmission. I have heard that most of the failures occur because of over heated bearings due to lack of sufficient lubrication. I drained the trans and pumped in 6 quarts of 75-90 Royal Purple synthetic gear lube. The transmission shifts ok except when really cold, then it is sometimes difficult to get into 1st gear. I can live with that knowing that there is some real lubrication happening. Then I began to wonder what does the transfer case use for lubrication? Is it also ATF4 and like in some "married" transmission/transfer case units is it possible for the fluids to mix through the input/output bearings where they are connected? Don't know what the consequences of that happening would be but I'm guessing that the two fluids are not compitable. Any ideas?

Per Standard Transmission's recommendations,I replaced my ATF+4 with Pennsoil Synchromesh. Shifting is the same cold or warm. It's got seven qts. in it now.

Just changed over to Pennsoil synchromesh on my 05. Gear box, which I did not think could get any quieter, is much quieter but I can't shift as fast through the gears as I could with the mopar +4 when it's cold. It's not an issue it's a truck not a race car... . Gear seems to run cooler also, guess time will tell. I also had read the TDR articles about the G56 and internal lube issues, just tryin to make things last as long as I can...

The 75-90 is too heavy and will burn the bearings, use pennsoil syncromesh. The transfer case and transmission are completely separate.

Synthetic fluid is not the recommended fill. It may not be the best choice. I would use Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid like the NV-5600 used.

I agree with regcabguy. If Standard Transmission recommends, I would follow their advice.

Thanks to you who replied. I actually knew that 75-90 was too heavy for any gear box that incorporates small roller or needle bearings. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before I did this. I guess I could blame it on Alzheimer's, but if I can remember what I did that was stupid it probably eliminates that excuse. In any case, since my local suppliers mostly don't even know what Pennzoil Syncromesh is (read "way out in the sticks") I drained the gear lube out and replaced it with fresh ATF4. When I get into civilization again I'm going to pick up the Syncromesh. Does it come in different weights?

I think it's only one weight. Autozone's got it,and you can look online. NAPA carries it. About $7. 00/qt with my AAA card.

Has anyone looked at the transmission products offered by Red Line? Back in my younger days I used their stuff in a turbo MR-2 and Datsun 2000 roadster with excellent results. Now I just manually shift my 6RFE... Hope this helps.

G56 requires ATF4 and nothing else.

Pennzoil Syncromesh Fluid unless its been redesigned would void the warranty on your G56. The required fluid is ATF+4 and the best available is Amsoil as it meets and/or exceeds all ATF+4 specifications. As you are always preaching, Harvey, only use the manufacturers recommended fluids and filters unless you want to be your own warranty station, right?

Neither Amsoil Universal ATF(I'm not aware of a true licensed ATF+4 from Amsoil, only "recommended") nor Pennsoil Synchromesh are installed by Dodge in the G-56.

Standard Transmission is seeing premature internal wear from what they feel is factory fill ATF+4 derived. I've run all three and can't tell the difference.

Time will tell whether the transmission can. I based my decision on Standard's recommendation.

When we stray from the factory specs. on lubes,we definitely are "our own warranty station. ":)

If you have a transmission built by Standard then obviously use what they recommend for their warranty. Factory trannys under warranty need ATF+4 or equivalent, there is no such thing as a requirement for a licensed ATF+4, thats an internet myth. Amsoil makes superior products which is why they do not have the need to pay Chrysler for a badge of approval.

+1 vote for the Pennzoil Synchromesh. I used this today after reading the TDR article.

Upshifting to 5th -which has always been a bit notchy in this truck- is improved.

Trans noise is down by about 50%. It was pretty quiet but has some sound transmitted through the shifter at 70 mph in 6th.

I used 7 quarts as recommended.

I wonder why Standard says use the Pennzoil Synchromesh in the G56, they told me when they rebuilt my 5600 to replace the factory oil (aka Pennzoil Synchromesh) with Amsoil MTF instead, it seems that would be a better choice for the G56 too since that is what they recommend for the 5600?

Bump for any answers... .

the gorilla juce is to thick for winter use for me. we settled on a 50-50 mix of 5w30 synthetic syncromesh and synthetic syncromesh sae50 the best shifting, lowest temp we have ever had.

If your under warranty, use OEM. If not use what Standard Transmission recommends. The oil you filled it with will damage it.
