I have a 08 6. 7, I'm trying to pull an oil sample but the sample tube will not fit through the bottom of dip stick tube. Is there a smaller opening at the bottom or what? I don't want to have to pull a sample at drain plug unless no other option.

The sample tube included with the Amsoil sampler is just the right diameter to get down the oil fill tube. With the engine warm, you want to sample the crankcase oil about 3 inches deeper than the dipstick. Another way is to catch a sample from the oil draining but about halfway through. Dont pull a sample from the bottom, it may not be representative.

I hadn't thought of that. Still learnin' about this diesel thing.

I guess you could run a couple of quarts into a clean bucket before taking the sample and then return the oil to the truck.

why do an oil sample on a new truck..... I think a lot of people get carried away with all this... ... get in and drive... it will last a long time... . And Im not making fun of the person who started this post... . just seems like people treat these trucks like there are nitro funny cars, and need to know what the motor is doing every sec of its life..... or maybe I just need to be taught something??

This may be true on the older trucks but with the 6. 7L trucks needing to meet the EPA emission requirements, that is a different story. The problem is you get more soot in the oil and fuel in the oil now. Most of us are trying to maximize the oil change interval and this can only be done by oil sampling.

If I did not sample I could be changing my oil between 2,500 and 3,500 miles. I now can change between 5,000 and 7,500 miles, do to sampling. Another reason to sample is to establish a base line on the engine wear. Once this is established you can than sample every other oil change and watch for any abnormalities in engine wear or over fueling do to a bad injector.

I have the same problem with mine. I've been able to use very rigid tubing and push and twist it past the obstruction, but it is difficult. It seems like that dipstick necks down just where it enters the block. Very frustrating.

I can run tubing all the way to the bottom of the pan so maybe there was a design change on the dipstick tube on the post 2008 trucks.....
