In regard to oil, if you're using a good diesel engine oil, you don't need and should not use additives. It you introduce additives that are not compatible with existing ones, you can do more harm than good. Valvoline Premium Blue Classic 15/40 is a joint venture with Cummins for pre 6. 7L engines. I wouldn't mess with a proven, balanced formula. It has the best additives in existence.

Couldn't have said it any better.

If the Lucas snake oil is so great why don't oems require it? I know a lot of people run it but it I never will.

The leak runs down the drivers side. Up high between the cp3 and engine it appears.

The machanic states it was the second cover that is leaking.

I had cleaned the engine at the car wash before taking it in.

It also appears to leak more the higher the rpm. I sleep in the truck at times and idle all night long, but there will be "zero" amount of oil on the pavement the next morning.

When I run the truck at 75 or higher for a couple three hours, then check for oil leak, it will be pretty wet and a drop or 2 may fall.

The oil runs down the drivers side, along and under the pan, bell housing and tran, driveshaft, bottom of fuel tank and front of axle. I do wash it off ever so often. D. O. T. will frown on such things.

I think it may be leaking in a place that doesn't hold oil until higher rpms.

I like the Lucas additive and maybe it is just a mind thing but I feel it helps when the engine is put to the grindstone.

thanks

That leak, unfortunately, is probably going to require the gear case to be pulled. Its the same problem as the other side, the oil being slung off off the gears when the rpms are up and the narrow area of sealing. The case expands at a different rate than the block and the gasket thins down and the oil pushes thru from the pressure.

Thank you cerb very much.

I don't feel this leak will hurt anything, you agree?

I'd like to wait till I need more to do like injectors or valve job or something.

thanks again

As long as its no excessive, the DOT doesn't get after you, and its easy to wash off then no.

My experience wasn't as good. What started out as a small leak that would get the block wet back to the turbo ended up covering the underside of the truck. I changed the oil in a 4k period from the leak. Messy! Took me weeks to get it off the under carriage.

Would a differant cam eliminate the soot in engine??

Won't totally eliminate it but it will help a lot. Part of the soot loading is the amount of fuel that is being burned to generate the power. You cna help it with a cam that gets rid of the exhausr overlap but the oil is going to turn black eventually.

Cerb- there is a product I get here at an industrial janitorial supply( amsan.
) that is called" orange tough 90". Its pink and smells like oranges but don't think it's harmless cause It'll burn the hell out of your skin( don't ask me how I know). Anyway, it dissolves oil and grease and makes it water soluble. I put it in a pump up weed sprayer. It'll cut oil and grease and even black mastic( aka cutback) 10x better than simple green or purple power. It runs about $200 per 5 gallons. Just to give you an idea how long 5 gallons will last I got black mastic off of 2k sq ft of concrete and still had over 2½ gallons left that I used around the shop for the next 6 months which probably wouldn't be impressive had I not clean
Up probably (altogether) 10 gal of transmission fluid and 5 gal of oil in additional
To cleaning numerous parts, degreasing my radiator and intercooler etc . It's good stuff.

I know the stuff you mean. As tempramental as the electrical connections and wiring is and as nasty as that stuff is, I would not even consider using it on and installed engine. If that is what you were thinking, if not disregard. :)
