I had the same problem on my 03 auto, all stock. under garantee two rebuilds and a new complete rear end. The last rebuild dealer used timkin bearings, no more problems. seems that dodge uses cheap jap bearings.

Make a lot of noise, louder than the rear end, call the factory, call and call. That's how I got mine fixed and I was 10000 over the garantee.

I work hard for that $40 some thousand that I paid for the truck. Make lots of noise.

If you have a two piece driveshaft it could be the carrier bearing. Mine starts to howl when it gets cold too.

Rebuild with timkin bearings your problen will be over. American axel uses cheap jap bearings. When you pull it apart you will find bearings all pitted. It took me a brand new compleat rear end and two rebuilds to find this out. The last time I insisted on timkin bearings.

40 thousand miles later no more noise.

Bob,

That is something I never understood with Dodge. Dodge says to service the diffs every 40 or 80 thousand miles or so. I have to pull my book out to be sure. Anyway, no other truck that I have owned have ever had this as part of regular service.

Did you ever own a truck with 600lbft before???

irrc it is more like 15&30k depending on severity of service with the AAM

I just pulled up my notes on what was done to the truck, and the front and rear diffs were servied at 21,636 miles, 41,600 miles, 62,700 miles, and 82,227 miles. I have the reminder written down for 20,000 miles.

I have a 2006 megacab. having that annoying howl at 2000-2200 rpm and with throttle engaged, if I go over a hump on the hiway the howl gets mild and returns. At take off I also feel a shutter similar to a torque convertor slipping. Some one help no one can find problem... Dealership says it's the exhaust. Exhaust is stock.

Two years ago I had the same shutter at take off and would go away as I got up to 55-60 mph, didn't notice a howl. Was able to stop driving it due to deploying for 6 months. Return and took it to a shop and it was the drive shaft center carrier bearing. Happens again I'm going one piece shaft.

Dealership dia. On my 06'mega 4x4 I need to have govnor pressure sensor and govnor solenoid replace along with band adj. / tightening. Had my own transmission shop change out parts. Problem still there. Carriage bearing rubber, i can move drive line side to side with effort about 1/2 in. Some say it's norm. Others say replace it..... should I just change it?

The problem with the carrier bearing isn't so much that it moves around with the rubber (it should), it's that it sags instead of sitting somewhat centered and the rubber breaks down to the point it won't control movement anymore. I would either replace it or better yet, go with a 1 pc DS. You won't regret it!

Remove the rear drive shaft and run the engine up to the speed where the noise is generated. That will confirm or exonerate the hanger bearing. Shut the engine off before putting it back into park if this is an auto trans.

My truck has this harmonic howl also, between 60-70mph is when it gets really bad. I started noticing it this spring and back then it was very faint and almost unnoticeable. It also did the shutter from take off every now and then. I did a fluid change and added a little bit of friction modifier and have not felt the shutter since, but the howl has slowly become more and more noticeable to the point where passengers ask what the noise is? I can hear it follow the drive train speed, but depending on where the throttle is at the noise will increase and decrease. If I match the throttle to the drive train speed while going down a hill (take the pressure off the drive train) the noise completely goes away? I did U-joints on the rear drive shaft 12,000mi ago hoping those would solve it but no go? I am at a loss

Time to check your backlash and the preload on the carrier bearings. Failing that, it could be inboard pinion bearing, as that is under load when the driveline is under power.

Same problem since new, well new to me in '06. Only makes the noise when cold though, I've inspected everything and have just wrote it off as a Dodgeism. If/when whatever it is ever breaks I'll let you know. BTW, I'm on 30k+ and 6 years with the noise now.
