Hub caps For free spin hubs

I have Dynatrac Hubs on my SRW 3500. What have you guys down about hub caps? I even though about using Ferd ( excuse me ) caps as they already have the hole although I'm sure it is too small. My truck has the stock aluminum wheels with the painted caps. Shad

I have Spyn Tech hubs. Used a 4 1/2" ( I think) hole saw to cut out for the hubs. Worked & looks OK. Just measure the Diameter of your hubs & get a hole saw slightly larger. Don't want to fork out for a hole saw? You can always use a jig saw if you take your time.

You can drill them with a 4-1/4" hole saw. Break off the casting nub on the inside and use it a a pilot to drill a 1/4" hole from the inside out. Then, use the hole saw from the outside drilling in. A drill press and a helper will make the job easier. With the aluminum wheels, your studs should be OK on the length.

I used a hole saw and die grinder. Its a bear but I fastened the cap to a piece of wood using srews and hole sawed from the inside out, go easy its easy to make a mistake...



I wish I had access to a lathe, that would be the hot ticket.

Hole saws are expensive. I used a scribe compass and drew my circle to cut out. I set the hubcap on my drill press and drilled all around the circle I drew and stayed inside the circle.

I popped out the center and cleaned up the diameter with a Dremel tool. Just did a set for my buddies 2002 that we installed a set of Dynatracs on.

Thanks guys. The one thing I was wondering about is when you take the caps off the pop off at an angle, so I wasn't sure how much clearance to allow. Shad

Now, when you remove the front caps, use two screwdrivers 180* apart and put you knee on the face of the hub so the cap doesn't go flying when it comes off.

I don't have much clearance on mine to the hubs.

That's why you drill from the outside to the inside.

Guys, I'm wondering if before I start the Dynatrac install, can I remove the hub cap, drill the pilot hole, put he hub cap back on, and then drill the center out with a 4 1/4 hole saw? Will this work? Thanks! Mark

Dave, They are the EMS hubs. I bought a set of Dynatrac hubs to get the $$$ break. They are 1. 25" shorter. I'll put the Dynatracs on this Summer.

The one thing I don't like about my Dynatracs is that the black coating on the hubs doesn't go all the way to the chrome end cap and it doesn't hold up either. I haven't driven the truck muck this winter and with no caps on it is looking ratty. Shad

I noticed that too on the kit I have yet to install on my truck. At least the EMS hubs that are on mine now were plated. I thought of cleaning up the castings for the Dynatracs BEFORE installing them and plating them.

My friend with the Dynalocs had to prime and paint the hub with Rustoleum. With the premium price being paid,Dynatrac should be powdercoating that piece.
