OK. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and do most of my work on my truck and many friends etc. I have on several occasions solved a wiring/mechanical issue that no one else could figure out. Would someone with a little more insight please educate me on the following. My ABS and brake light recently came on and NOTHING I did would reset it. The dealer said," I bet it's the rear wheel sensor. They always go out" Problem is my speedometer, which I know receives a tone signal from the same sensor, worked just fine, so I had my doubts about the dealer's "Off the cuff" diagnosis. To be sure, I took it in to them(a very respected dealer I might add) and paid a whopping $109. 00 for them to hook up the "Chrysler proprietary DRB scanner" and tell me that it was the CAB(Controller Anti Brake) module. Now, I know to hook the scanner up and retrieve the code takes all of about 5-10 minutes, but I do understand that since Chrysler has created their own proprietary DRB scanner to the tune of about 15 grand I am told, that the dealers have to recoup their investment. So now we have confirmed that the CAB is bad. Now the REALLY cool part! The new CAB... . It's VIN specific, and guess who the only source is for it????Yup. Chrysler. For a mere $526. 70 for the new CAB and thennnnnnnnnnnnnnn $166. 00 for the dealer to install it (which takes all of about 10 minutes) they hook up their handy dandy "Reflash" tool, and "burn" my VIN number into the new CAB so that it talks to my ECM(which I really suspect is a way to make sure that if my truck ends up in a wrecking yard someday that no one else who needs a CAB can use it in their truck) So, My question for any of you "more in the know" is this. Is all this "horsepoop" and $804. 20 really necessary or is this a built in money making program so that Chrysler and their dealers can make some easy money. I don't mind paying for parts and service, but this seems like a serious case of " We got you by the male appendage and we're gonna make you pay"
