Have a QSB 173C in a yard goat, replaced the gear housing. The injection pump gear doesn't have the usual timing marks on it. Any one have a clue which of the letters I use for timing?

There are no timing marks :) What you're calling an injection pump is known as a CP3. I believe the CP means Constant Pressure. Just put it in and let it rip. It's not timed. The injectors are electronically fired. In that QSB, is the geartrain in the front or rear of the engine?? If I may ask, Why did you have to replace the housing?

Possible that the air compressor got it, we have had to brace them in the past due to the weight and vibration. Ford had the same issue with 6B engine applications in air brake equipped trucks.

Only speculating to see if I guessed correctly... ... . :D

Mike. :)

I'll buy that Mike. It's not everyday I see a compressor on a buzzing B, but this is a yard goat (switcher?)

Yes, and being a yard horse or switcher that needs plenty of air most likely has a 750 cfm which is heavier than the 500 cfm. Again, just speculating for fun... .

More info. Engine is a 2006, 12 valve head, VP44 pump, mechanical xfer pump indrustrial yard tractor with air comp. Gearcase was OK, customer wanted to replace.

TOTAL RETRACTION! I didn't know there was a VP44/ QSB... My apologies. I thought all QSB were common rail. With the VP44 pump, there IS a timing procedure. It is a computer controlled mechanical injector pump. I have never done it, but I'm hoping one of the many here jump in to tell. Are you sure it's a 12 valve? the VP44 was used with 24 Valve engines- I thought...

Yes,it' a 12 valve. Definitely a combination of parts I've never seen before. Don't see much indrustrial stuff, though.

If you something from the service manual let me know. Engine serial number would be a requirement for me for sure... ... strange little critter. .

Mike.

Engine serial # is46675107. All Cummins info I have references lining up hashmark on pump gear with O on cam gear. This pump gear has a series of letters corresponding with gear teeth. Don't know which letter to use.

Ok, am working in Houlton today so will dig into this after I get home tonite. See what I can find for you.

Mike.

Much appreciated, thanks.

Ok, I think I found it. This is quite the little engine. QSB5. 9-30. Says that the pump is a VP-30. Wow... .

I will print and scan the service procedure for checking pump timing, removal and installation. Can't do it here, so will do it first thing in the morning at the shop. Please send me an e-mail and I will respond with the attachment for you.
