I have a 2003 2500 HD base. is the auto transmission a 47RE or a 48RE??? Date of man. 3/3/2003. thanx. SOFTAILER The last 8 #'s of the VIN are 3G804356.

You can select D2 and accelerate normally. When you get around 2000 rpm, if the torque converter locks up, you have a 48. Some say you have to have to hit the "tow-haul" for this to happen, but not on my 04. 47s don't have a second gear lock-up. Mark
 
Bob, this is so cool of you to let softailer know he has a 48RE. So many folks believe that is an advantage, Bill @ DTT told me he prefers a 47RE because of less mass.

Either way, they are both excellent units for their time...
 
I'm getting ready to do some maintenance on my 06 Ram 3500 QC 4x4 CTD Automatic. Any chance you can tell me what trans I have? VIN is 6G152250 Transmission part # stamped on the flange above the pan is:

48RE was the only automatic trans available in your model year. The early 03's were the only models that were questionable as they were going through the transition from the 2nd gens.
