I'm new to t. D. R. , so bear if this question has been asked . Does anyone have input on fuel additives . Mechanic at shop where I bought my truck said cummins needs only good quality fuel , no additives . Other brands need them but not cummins. Want engine to live long with much power . Heard b. G. Has good stuff . Don't want to use additives if not needed . Interested on your opinions . Seems like many people here know their stuff form what I have read , so far , will wait for input , it will be greatly appreciated .

When the temps drop below freezing( I'm sure they already have in SD) I add the recommended dose of Power Service when I fill up. I use the product in the white container. It seems to work fine, is available at TSC, Wal Mart, and most parts stores. From time to time I have also used Howes. I think it might be a little more economical, because the dose is lower, but it can be harder to find.

Please fill out your signature so we can see what CTD you own, but seeing how you started a thread on the 4th Gen Forum, I'll assume you have a 6. 7. Dodge discourages the use of additives due to the DPF and regen, but when below certain temps you need to keep your fuel from gelling. A popular additive I used to use with my 5. 9 CTD, was www.marvelmysteryoil.com, it can be used in gas or diesel engines oil, or in gas or diesel fuel, but it does not prevent fuel from gelling in low temps. I use it in all of my gas engines and fuel, it keeps the injectors clean. If you open up URL and click on the FAQ tab, it will answer a lot of your questions. I have used it for the last 25+ years, with no negative results that I can tell. When my gas injectors were checked on my old 94 2500 5. 9 gasser, the mechanic asked me if I used additives and was amazed at how clean they were for 100K plus miles that were on them.

I have been using Stanadyne Preformance Formula in all 3 of the CTD's I have owned and have been very pleased with the results. Helps protect the injector system and keep it clean. Don't know about the milage boost as I have never tested with and with out to see what difference it makes.

Just added. " d. F. C. Plus". Made by. " b g " . It has lubricant , anti gell , and stabilizer . Only 4oz per 34 gal . Hope it does what it says , will keep you posted on results . Heard it is much better than power service.

What does your owner's manual say on the subject? The owner's manual has always been my guide not the baloney spread here.

I would agree with your mechanic. As stated previously the owners manual says they aren't needed, however if you feel the need to run them just make sure it is ULSD compatible or you may run into EGR and/or DPF problems.

Cummins and dodge both have always said not needed or recommended. I have been approached by many vendors to test their additives. Some may make a slight diff in mileage but so far none that made economical sense-pay back. An occasional use for cleaning or in arctic climates makes more sense than daily use

BOB4X4,
I have never ran any additives but have often considered running a periodic injector cleaner. Do you think there would be a problem with this? Helpful at all? These injectors are extremely expensive and would like to keep them operating for a long time.
Is not a problem, do you have a recommendation on a periodic cleaner?

Take note of the OPs address. Operating without fuel conditioner in winter is foolish. One tank of fuel that is not winterized before delivery to the station will cost more than a years worth of conditioner.

If you need an anti-gel for winter, by all means, use it... Do NOT use Marvel Mystery Oil in a 4th gen truck. .
If you want to use a fuel additive, use it. . as others have said, make sure its for use with an emissions diesel and compatible with the exhaust/regen system. Many things found on parts store counters can do more harm to modern fuel systems than good...

Its been to just below 0 a couple of times, single digits most other nights . Running #2 with 4. 2 ounces of b g conditioner per tank that costs about 4. 00 per tank . No gell , and seems run quieter. Just got back from 100 mile roadtrip , got 19. 8 mpg .

I would say you got lucky. If I lived where you do I would not take a chance on #2, I would always use the winter blend. In Arizona we don't have a choice, all stations only have one grade, thats winter fuel. It can get below zero where I live and I never use any additive, period.

Just fueled up with straight #2 fuel , added 3oz. B g fuel additive . Went 140 miles . 12 above zero . Averaged 20. 4 mpg

You are alright going along while the fuel is warm from being returned to the tank. The next day may be when you have trouble...

Our most dangerous time here is in the fall when the fuel is not to the max winter blend. That's when I use a little Power Service.

Also will treat with Power Service this fill-up as we had rain last week, now tonight it will be -5 below at least. You only have to gell up once, then you never want it to happen again.

Mike.
