Airstream Travel Trailer

Tire size/RPM/ Economy?

All you need is an extended kingpin box and a B&W Companion and you are good to go.

An extended pinbox doesn't change the width of a trailer. The cab-to-5th wheel contact problem with a short bed as it approaches 90 degrees is amplified with 102" wide trailers such as mine.

And, no, I'm not anti-B&W; as I said, I've towed with one since 2001. I also know some 3rd generation Ram QC SB owners in our RVing group that use the Companion to tow their 5th wheels and have dented cab C pillars.

Did they have an extended kingpin box? It is very rare that you need to turn so sharp that contact could occur.

Bottom line get a real truck if you want to use it as a truck, 8' bed!

I have no problem with that, but this thread is about the B&W Companion SLIDER. One doesn't need a slider with a long bed truck, but may or may not with a short bed truck, which was my point. That's why I have a long bed truck.

Hey, Im only 96" wide!!!. maybe the slider was a mute point to begin with??. .

I just bought the companion for mine, but I also have the long bed. I agree I don't think we need this with our long bed trucks. I am sure its a great product though coming from B & W.

So, after reading through the posts and getting much advice from you all, I decided on the slider. I know, I know. Many of you don't see the need for the slide. As for me, and as RustyJC mentioned, it only takes once to biff the truck to learn your lesson with a short bed! Been there done that. The truck came out on the winning end. The 5th wheel paid dearly over time from the tweak of hitting the cab. So, with that I prefer to not take the chance with the new truck. The down side...with rocks in my hip pockets I weight 135 lbs, so getting that base out has already got me thinking about a scissor cart to slide it onto when I want the hitch out of the truck. Much heavier than the Reese. I had no problems getting it out. The upside, no rails in the truck. I haul all kinds of stuff and need the bed clear when I am shoveling it out.
Big thanks to everyone's posts and to Joe D. I'll be trying this out in a couple of weeks on the first short trip of the season.

frame hitch?
Looks like they have totally redesigned it from the first concept. Does it use the Dodge

No, this is the B&W model 3400 with the turnover gooseneck hitch plate mounted to the frame. The release lever to remove the slide frame is on the driver's side under the under the fender well. I'm guessing the 3500 released the same way.

The looks of your hitch is a far cry from the original build when it was released that I was so critical of and quite a few posters were critical of me. I am glad the smarted up.
