HMMMM. I was wondering what happened to bluebird, and why International had to come out with their own school bus body. Those front ends sure look like Freightliner.

I guess I should be impressed by the similar mileage achieved by class 8 OTR trucks.

I wonder how you're makin out with your rig, Wingate?

ITs in a holding pattern... The discussion has been between Ford warranty, the dealership, our Ford rep, and our fleet manager, our 3rd party fleet management service... there have been many e-mails flying around. The discussion is centered around warranty paying for a replacement engine, vs shortblock and a set of dealership rebuilt heads, vs dealership repair of existing engine. And, as with anything, the manufacturer wants it done as cheap as possible since its only 15K away from warranty end, the dealership just wants to get paid for the work done and NOT have the customer back in 20K miles with the rods hanging out, and the customer(us) wants nothing short of a brand new engine!. I guess we will see where it all falls out at pretty soon.

Daimler bought Thomas Bus, Navistar bought Blue Bird Bus.



No more choice of chassis brands like there was 20 years ago.

Lots of power companies here have gone to either gasser Ford chassis or to the 5500 Ram with diesels.

One huge fleet is switching to Cummins/Westport LNG with their own refueing logistics network. actually getting their own tankers and stations.

Seeing more and more Ram C&C's- wreckers, landscapers n stuff. The FDNY has a couple Ram 5500 as bucket trucks for 911 comm sys and I hear they're working out nicely.
 
Got it back!. New short block and a set of rebuilt heads. Dang thing is, the new 12 model I was driving while waiting on the 11 model to be fixed shut down on me and refused to fire up!. Had to have IT wreckered into the dealership. Ended up driving a previously retired 05 model GMC 4500 for about a week... truck has over 200K HARD miles on it...

Talked with the service advisor about the 12 model, said they had 3 of them (C&C trucks) from various local companies in right now with the exact same symptoms.
 
Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that whoever is supplying your rigs is not open to spec a good truck :confused: I just got a repair ticket to replace the fanbelt on one of the 6. 4's we have- NOT lookin forward to that! I'd rather do another tandem rear reline lol.
 
Well. . this is going to be the story that never ends. . back in the shop again... lost 2 1/2 gallons of coolant overheated to the moon while I was running it in pto mode. No visible leaks or coolant smell, added coolant, drove it a day or two and its started hydrolocking on cold startups. Its back in the shop, service advisor called and said the cab is coming back off.....
 
I have yet to hear of these new Scorpion motors blowing up under a hard load. Seems it always happens just running down the highway, or in your case idling with PTO on. That sure makes me think it's in the regeneration programming.
Any thoughts?
 
Wow, it's back at the same place? Is that tech still there who put the heads on? I wonder if He's gonna have to eat the job? Maybe they'll give you a longblock this time. If it Hydrauliced, I'm sure the bottom end has been compromised.

There was just reading a thread on a Ford site of one locking up cruising empty on I-95. I never thought about it until you mentioned it.
 
according to the lead diesel tech that worked on it, the original block actually split a cylinder wall. Whether it was due to intense overheating or hydraulic lock. . who knows. .
I believe the initial thought process was that the radiator started leaking at the tank seam, the truck ran low on coolant, overheated, got the head gaskets, hydraulic locked and bent the rods... . sounds plausible. .

I dont know how billing will go, I would hope the manufacturer would step up and realize that by trying to piece-meal it back together the last time, it simply created more expenses. The engine got all the original injectors put back in it, along with the EGR cooler, CAC, injection pump, turbo... Being that the turbo and EGR are both water cooled, they should have been changed, but weren't, Ford would not authorize it.

I wonder what the duty cycle of the EGR is. If at a steady light cruise it flows a lot (as opposed to a high boost situation EGR when it may be off) and the cooler leaks, I can see coolant getting into the cylinder in a bad way. I know our Mack MP7's "consume" coolant in mass quantities. Some say it's the EGR cooler, some say its the wet jacketed injectors. Either way sometimes they use a bucket a day before they get fixed. Since they're under warranty, I don't know what the fixes are. We've never had a catastrophic failure though.
