Why not? Find a later model with a blown up 6-litre and have it repowered.

If you want a real HD SUV to pull a trailer with that is your choice. Otherwise, its a suburban and a repower or stretch what you have. At some point I am pretty sure that repowered Excusion is going to hold its value better.

Why wouldn't an EX work, they were and still are the biggest SUV ever made. I had a 2000 with the 7. 3 and I did not have any problems with it. It was very roomy and comfortable to drive. If i had a big family that is what I would get. If the engine ever blew I would have it repowered with the might "C".

It is a beautiful example of the breed and the price is not all that bad when compared to new ones now. As others suggested, the old school bus motor was not bad either except when compared to a Cummins. That one will probably make 350k miles with good maintenance, perhaps more.

I can't let this one go, have you considered a short bus?????

Like this... . ????

If the stigma would be too much, then you need an Excursion for sure.

There's a family here that has a BOAT LOAD of members in it, I wont even guess how many of them there are. He was at the NAPA parts store and I came in with our Chevy PU cummins conversion. We talked about the conversions his is a 1977 Chevy Suburban. its in REALLY good shape for being a MT car. I kind of like the idea of the back entrance to the truck for hauling groceries or what ever out of the weather. His has a rear facing seat that folds down. An easy conversion with a 1st gen motor and a turbo 400 like we both have.

Get an Excursion with the 7. 3. When I find the right buy on a wrecked 03-04 Dodge pickup with an auto, I'll make the motor swap and smile from ear to ear.

If you are dead-set on swapping to a cummins, you may be interested in this link:

I imagine finding an excursion with a V-10 would be easier and much cheaper to acquire than a diesel excursion, plus people have already done them, so the learning curve wouldn't be as steep.

Keep us posted with your decision. A cummins powered 8 seater sure would be nice. Although, still nothing wrong with a trusty 7. 3. Even the ..... 6. 0..... could be a good choice if you took it straight to a guy like Bill from www.PowerStrokeHelp.com and had him "bulletproof" the motor for you. I understand it isn't really that much to have done, and THEN they can be strong, reliable motors. I know he does these motors all the time on pickups. He pulls the cab. I wonder how he does it with an Excursion, being there is no "cab", but the whole body...
Interesting nonetheless.

And no, I don't need to hear how the 6. 0 is junk. I think we all know that. . but they are good motors when the few weak links are addressed. Save your flaming... :)

A Sick. Ohh may be fine for moving an eight passenger vehicle like the Excursion. I can assure you they will never be a reliable engine for long term heavy towing such as some of my fellow RV transporters were trying to do with them in the '05 - '08 time frame.

I dunno. . I think you may be giving the 6. Oh No more credit than it deserves. With 8 people in an Excursion, you may be sitting at 10,000 lbs. Those motors were known to give up just cruising down the road empty, as you know. If I needed one and it had a 6. Oh No, I would have the few problems addressed, like head gaskets and studs and a few other things for preventive measures, and call it good.
Either way, sounds like an interesting proposition.

I already own the Excursion. It was necessary when my third child was born and now I have four. It works great with the mods I've done to it so far. It just lacks the get up and go of a Cummins.

Thanks for the link. Strangely enough, I didn't have that one bookmarked (I have a lot). When I do the engine/transmission swap, it will more than likely be with a v10 equipped Excursion. I'll sell the one I currently have and v10 X's are cheeeeeep.

I did look into a 6. 0 at one time, but after consulting with my local diesel mechanic, he told me to avoid everything with that motor. He said that you can 'bulletproof' them, but there are no guarantees since some of the best parts available are what came with it in the first place. I like most of what Bill has to say, but there sure is a group of haters on a couple of the Ford forums.

From Glassdoor.com, Navistar reviews from current and former employees... .

One engineers opinion about the 6. 0L

snip...

Cons - Technical Leadership at the highest level has been wanting. Example: The 6. 0 liter engine was known to be very problematic and required further development, but was pushed into production prematurely. The most senior technical leaders (VPs) lack sound engineering knowledge and experience. Most are political appointees. While having had a great technical history, things went down hill dramatically since the release of the 6. 0 liter diesel. Those responsible for this and subsequent technical failures have moved on in the company, to other positions of authority, rather than having been dismissed. Politics overshadows sound judgment.
