On a hot day, 85/90 deg. the discharge pressure can be 215 to over 300lbs. Suction pressure with compressor under heat load can be 40 to 60 lbs. bg

The service manual says if it rotates more than a few revolutions (I forget the exact count, and can't find it in the manual right now) then the clutch is faulty. I would say if you've never had any overheating issues then don't worry about it, your fan is working fine.

Ryan,

FYI, See page 7-56 in the Factory Service Manual (FSM). :)

According to the FSM: If the fan spins more than five times after being spun by hand when the engine is cool, it needs to be replaced.

Turn the ignition key on-off-on-off-on and see on the odometer screen if you have a DTC. When the fan clutch gives problems, you should have a companion DTC.

As I posted recently under a different topic, I found my orange wire green at the low point where the harness loops up near the fan clutch connector. I checked and sure enough, I had P0480, and then the bulb went off in my head as to why the A/c had seemed lackluster lately. I fixed the wire, and then I began to hear the fan again- oh so slightly, since it's been real hot out. And my A/C is decent again. Since I've done this, the 480 has cleared.

I'm not sure about the vibration, but if there was a fan problem, you'd see it in more ways than one.

Might be a dumb question, but what if it only spins about 3" when you let go?

I just replaced a hihg mileage one with new OE fan and that is what it does, about one blade width when you spin it. The old fan would do almost a 1/2 turn under the same conditions, throwing codes, AC would not work at an idle, and the truck would heat in traffic. No more issues with new clutch. :)

Checked mine again, and it will spin with some slight resistance more than five times by hand (I stopped at seven). It's the original part (almost 11 yrs/138k miles), so I guess I can't complain. Funny thing is I've never had a cooling problem even when towing heavy here in the summer. For those who've bought a replacement, is it best to get it at a Dodge or Cummins dealer?

The freewheeling is like "try to spin the fan and let go". A better way might be to start engine and shut it off and have someone watch the fan and see how many revolutions it turns. If you turn it by hand you can turn it all day and it won't stop. bg

It is a Dodge only part, Cummins doesn't carry them. Cheapest place is to buy them online form a Dodge parts wholesale outlet. Don't bother twith the Dorrman replacements, they do not seem to work anywhere near as well.
