I have a question my truck has a build date of 7 98 so what year is it the owners manual that with the truck says its for a 98 and info for both the 12 valve and 24 valve engine .

It's a 24 valve when I go to get parts they ask if it's a 98 or 99 not 98. 5

If it's a 24v, then just tell the parts counter lackey that it's a 99 if they can't comprehend 98. 5.

Officially there is no 98. 5, Dodge enthusiasts came up with that to distinguish between the 12 & 24 valve engines.

One thing to know at the parts counter is 12V engines are option code D and 24V is option code 6.

98. 5 Distinguishes it as a 24v if you tell them it is a 98 it could be 12v or 24v so just tell them it is a 98 24v

Kind of like the rare 99 HO engine (might have been 2000). Ran across one once. Don't like doing VP's twice.

Dodge does body changes on the model year and engine/drivetrain on the half year. Dodge gets an extra "all new" marketing bump every year. Plus it messes up jobbers since their parts system can't handle split years. Plus Dodge can run down their inventory before changing over to the new parts. That's why the dealer wants a VIN when ordering parts.

Not to run off topic, at work we have a 2007 F350 that the build date is the exact same day (5-21-07) as the mid year model change. Makes it hell getting parts for it even from the dealer as this truck is a hodge podge of both model years. We've learned to just order the part for an '07 and '08, then return what didn't fit.

My truck was delivered 7/98. I just tell the countermen 98. 5 24 valve.

Another problem related to the mid-year engine changes I recently found out was with the factory service manual I ordered for the 1998 trucks. I have a 98. 5 24v. In the diesel fuel system section it says:

FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM—DIESEL POWERED
ENGINE
Two different fuel systems are used for the diesel
engine in the 1998 model year. The early '98 fuel
system, using the two-valve-per-cylinder engine, will
retain the mechanical fuel injection pump as used in
previous model years. The late '98 fuel system, using
the four-valve-per-cylinder engine, will use an elec*tronic
fuel injection pump with two control modules.
This book will include information for the early '98
fuel system only.

So I'm out of luck. I suppose I have to order a 99 model year service manual also to cover everything on my 98. 5??

I have a 98 24 valve. I have a 99 service manual, because I thought I'd save a couple bucks on getting a 98 manual( has 12 valve info ) and having to get a supplement manual for the 24 valve. The 99 manual is different than the 98 in as far as wiring stuff, as far as I have found.

What year is it titled as? A build date of 7/98 should be MY 99 unless the build was started in June. If it is a 24V then 99 will be close enough to what you need.
