The last 6-71 Detroit Diesel that ran away on me took the following to shut it down...

(1) Down jacket drove into the air cleaner intake

(1) Mechanic to sit on the jacket

(1) Fuel Filter Wrench

(1) Hammer (to smash the fuel filter off in cas the wrench couldn't start it off)

(1) Father standing on steer tire trying to hold the rack back by hand (Valve Cover was off, Thank God)

(1) Son (me) destroying the fuel filter.

(2) Interested parties watching.

There is nothing quite like a runaway. Had a 3406 run away here in the shop, first tech got away from it. Another tech came along with more fortitude and got it shut down.

The motor grenading is bad enough, but the clutch and input shaft spinning at that kind of speed is an equal issue to worry about.....

Mike.

Would (a CO2 fire extinguisher) not coat everything internally?

Nope, it's nothing but carbon dioxide gas which displaces all the oxygen and shuts off the oxidation (fire or, in this case, diesel combustion) process. CO2 or, before the EPA became concerned with depletion of the ozone layer and later global warning, halogen are used in computer rooms, etc. because it doesn't leave any harmful residue, but everyone had better get out before a CO2/halogen fogging system goes off or they'll suffocate!!

:-laf Hmm.... A run away diesel. That cummins is probably not happy sitting there for 7 years waiting to run. When it finally did, it wanted to run out the shop and chase cars down the road.:-laf

Hhhuntitall: since you live 1,400 miles away, shall I give Bschwarzli a bump when I see him on sept 12?:-laf

If so, How would you like me to do it?

Head butt?
Back hand across the head?
Wrapped up newspaper?
Boot?
Cattle prod?

I'll give him a bump in person for you when I see him next week.

Nigel

Look at your Capt. Trouble!

Hey, Can I get one in, too!??! At least his head will match on each side!! :D

Oh of course you would want to get in on this.... ;)

Just a friendly bi-annual bump... :)

See what you started? ;)

UPDATE:

Console and headrests still waiting to be done at the interior place. :( Apparently he is "busy". Parts collecting here still and have made arrangements to have no other projects this winter minus the crew. All going well, it will actually get done.

September is here. That means T minus 8 weeks till wrenching season begins. I will keep you all in the loop! :)

Yes, w250 requires priority over the w350 at all times. The w250 is his love, his wife.

Married under sunset at the beach. ;)

Stop kidding your self you may star driving it but you know as long as you own it, it will never really be done, there will always be that one thing that could be different

Oh, I don't know..... there is a point where they're done.... Usually after every last piece has been removed from it's beaten and broken carcass.... and the metal hauled to the scrap yard..... it's a sad day. Kinda like a funeral, with an old title with your name on it for a reminder, the VIN number the only thing left... :{

LOL This is actually true. As the 250 is a summer daily, it must be ready to go at all times. Therefore it always has priority as it hauls the bacon.

And yes. She is like my wife so I have to look after her....

I know, just poking fun, not like I have room to talk.

Yeah I know you are. I don't take this banter personally. :D

Oh god no no no no. If it is a good truck, you never let it get to that point!!

Looking forward to seeing progress. I know from personal experience, that it's easy to lose momentum on a project that spans several years timeframe. Actually, I've got an old '87 Dodge W150 that's been an ongoing sideline project for 11 years now....

Where are you at on the engine side of things? Is it together now the way you want it?
