Long Story short I needed something to tow a boat (the model with trailer we want came in around 8000 lbs) and are planning on towing it long haul to FL a couple times a year.

I did the research and decided to go with a Diesel, my uncle has a 2500 5.9 24V with over 400K and tows a large 5th wheel.

I looked and looked and looked and found a 2008 2500 with the 6.7, it was a fleet truck but i got the maint records and even with 160K on the clock seems to be in great shape.

I am in process of changing the fluids, filters, just waiting for the EGR filter to arrive. ect. I have a company car and we take the wives out of town so it may get 5k a year.

My questions:
1. is there anything I should be watching for with the truck, especially since it will sit allot! outside of the normal maint.

2. I am not trying to spark a thread about which programmer/tuner's are best ect. I like the form and function of the banks and will probably only use it to get a little better MPG and help towing.
does anyone have the banks IQ2 with programming?
what are your thoughts on performance and real world driving?
is it easy to read the display how are the gauge's?

My truck get close to the same miles per year. Can't say there is anything to watch for other than little critters.

As far as tuners go I think the consensus is smarty for the cummins. I am sure others can/will chime in. I am very happy with my smarty and glad I lightened to people here.

one thing i have been playing with is tire pressure, what pressures do you guys run? driving it around town it is a little rough when they are pumped up to the door sticker. all of the driving so far has been unloaded I know i will pump them up when towing.

Thanks!

The biggest thing is to look at the front end for play.

You dont say what trans.

Best inprovement: get rid of the emissions. Get a 4" turbo back exhaust with muffler, efi live with csp5 switch and you will instantly fall in-love with the night and day difference. Dont believe in the fancy intake and espcially with gale banks. Do a little search on him and you will figire who he truely is in the diesel world.

Unfortunately your uncle got the better deal. What you have is NOT a 5.9 so the comparisons start going off track.

Personally, I would not touch a truck between 07.5 and 2012 WITHOUT planning and be able to delete a lot of things and toss a bunch more. Not the same consistency and reliability as the 5.9's.

I actually love a 6.7 once its deleted. My next pickup will be a 6.7 deleted. But a 4th gen. I know all the pickups I have deleted run great, get great mileage, and the customers havnt had one single problem.

Probably not going to delete anything no emissions in AL but maybe moving again into emissions state. I looked and looked and with the age of trucks and the price and options, I still have my 99 ford i bought new if that give you any idea how long i hold onto a truck, I just couldn't justify the price tag of a new truck and there is not allot of inventory inventory under 200k in the area.

one of the reasons i was looking at the banks was not necessarily the tuning i like the function of the IQ for monitoring, I saw the edge cts as well, just want to error on the conservative side of power I would like to get a long reliable life out of this truck.

If you are planning on keeping the emissions, even if your not, I would remove the intake manifold and clean the grid heater. They load up with soot from the EGR. This causes poor performance and increased cylinder temps.

There are lots of things you can monitor, but on a stock truck I am not sure how many are necessary.

an 8k# trailer is next to nothing behind this truck. 2 trips to Florida and back every year plus a lot of sitting time? Just do PM and let it be. No need for all the banks do-dads and tuners. Increase/add fuel filtration and be done. IF you want get a Smarty Touch w/pyro to monitor everything you want. data log too.
