I had my ’99 trans rebuilt a little over a year ago and just recently it threw a P1740 code. After looking up the code I took it back to the trans shop…he replaced some sort of solenoid and the problem was solved and he also cleared the code. I keep the truck in California and it’s time to renew the registration and smog check required. It failed not because of the MIL being on or any codes but that the truck has not been driven enough since the code was cleared. Makes no sense to me but that’s California.
I asked the smog tech how many miles will I need to put on it before returning and he suggested at least 100 miles. Does this make sense??
Thanks for any input

YEP! Something similar happened to me. I didn't put enough miles on the truck after switching my Edge CTS back to stock setting. I put a 100 plus miles on it and it passed. Your computer records a certain amount of history. Much of it emissions related. If it hasn't recorded enough data you fail the smog. This can also happen after disconnecting the batteries. Welcome to Kaliforni. I can't wait to leave.Good luck TDR brother.

Thanks Larry. After posting I did some further research on the internet using, "OBD II drive cycle." Lots of info available.
thanks again...you can't beat the TDR.

They are called monitors-A set of driving duty cycles that allow self checks to be done to confirm the systems are operating correctly,Very recently Cali stiffend up the requirements

Many code readers have "emissions readiness" monitor built in. Code reader tells you if vehicle is "ready" for smog check.

Same thing happen to me. Had a battery go bad so changed both like you should. Five days later did smog and failed. Took a week to get enough history to pass. Now I live in Ohio no more smog test for now aleast.

Oooohhhhh and don't we know how it feels to get STIFFED in Kaliforni!!! Sacramento says JUST SHUT UP AND PAY!!!!

Growing up here, the air and sea are way cleaner than in my youth thanks partly to the EPA and Sacramento.
And then there's the Bullet Train.

I plugged in my scanner this afternoon after driving about 90 miles and scrolling through the menu I came upon a " Ready" notation. I guess that means I can go get this thing done.

I love San Diego...isn't San Diego county exempt from the smog cert?

YES!!! Boeing S. San Diego is exempt from smog checks, just have a line at the border each day to get your truck. :-laf

Sorry Boeing I only say this and give you a kick in the ribs because I know you wont go ballistic and start a war (Maybe)

Wouldn't know about that line I was very young the last time I was over the line. I never seen anything that interested me enough to go back. Been off shore many times fishing but none of the fish wore serapes or sombreros or hierarchies, so I figured they must be good to go. ;)

I've put about 175 miles on the truck but my scanner still shows monitor 1 is INC and #2 is ready and no codes MIL off. Any ideas on how much this truck has to be driven to fix monitor #1?
thanks

Unfortunately Cummins did not see fit to share that info with us......

Apparently, I've missed something in the use of this scanner. After my previous post I took the truck back to my friends smog shop and explained that the scanner is still showing "INC." He hooked up his scanner and said the truck was good to go...plugged it in to his system and was out of there in ten minutes. Who knows... but I doubt that the truck will ever be tested again and someone told me that there is a build a reef program in the Cortez...can't think of a more respectful end to a good truck.;)
