Better fuel filter than 7 micron? Dodge OEM Severe Filter kit PART #68083853AB

The new SDFK is a 3µ Rating, and yes the Finer Fikter is before the (then useless) OEM Canister.

I still prefer the SDFK because of the Fuel Heater AND the WIF Light as an OEM solution, but with the downside of the only available OEM Filters.

If someone is machining an adapter piece to fit standardfilters I would buy one immediately. Wouldn't be a big deal because there is already an adapter piece in it to hold the fuelheater up. Just with the wrong threads on it, I think M14 is SDFK.

I am pretty sure I read that and then it was rebutted as either false or a nominal rating.

It would be interesting to know what the SDFK rating is. I personally would want the OEM filter though, should the other filter have a defect. It happens!

Jup I've still a Filter in the OEM canister and change it always together with the SDFK.

Well, i just ordered a filter head= Wix 24770... And the Baldwin 1212 water sep and filter... NOW I'M GOOD!

Thanks Ipennock, Very informative. Except upon reading it is very confusing to try and figure out which kit applies to which truck if ?? They could have done a little better on that with those footnotes. It also indicates a tank ventilation kit may be required.

You don't need the tankkit, that can be done with very cheep fuel filter from lawnmower or something, and a little 3/8 Fuelhose.

I ordered my SDFK from Stevewhite.com with the VIN, so got what I needed.

Does the kit explain how to make the mod or were you able to locate the existing vent and just add the filter. I bought my truck from Steve White Motors who sent me a email on this kit. Ordering it from a dealer using the VIN would be the best way.

They are easy to find, there are 3 open vents on top of the fuel tank, one in the front, one in the middle, one in the rear.
The filters are only to prevent that it sucks in some dirt from the outside.

So either the writer was lazy and it's 5um absolute (98.7%), or it's just shy of 5um absolute. 3um @ 86% isn't too bad. It won't be an extended life filter thou.

Now you have me even more curious. I have always assumed there was some kind of filter in a vent if nothing else to keep bugs out. I've also wondered about a check valve to prevent fuel spillage. It is one place I've never explored on my truck. Just to hard to explore without a reason to do it.

But there IS a reason to do it…at last for awhile the trucks often came from the factory withvent tubes that were OPEN at one end. Sometiems the vent fittings on top of the canister assembly that drops into the fuel tank didn;t even have a cap or line on them. It is DEFINTELY worth checking out. The EASIEST way is to remove the 4 bed volts and lift the bed up with a helper or prop to give full access..if not, you need to crawl around under the truck with a mirror to explore what is or is NOT there.

You make it sound so easy, you must be a pro! I think however I will check into this next summer when the weather is better. (I have to work outside.) Just 4 bolts for the bed? That does sound a whole lot easier than dropping the tank. I have a tractor with a loader on the front so I can lift things pretty easily.

Most automotive (gasoline) vent systems are closed, know as the Evap system in ODBII speak, but diesel fuel vent systems are open. There are rollover check valves built into the vents, but they generally open and unfiltered. Recently, our newest Macks have filtered vents. Like Ozy said, it's just a basic inline filter with a length of neoprene, open for venting. I was told that this was done to further clean the fuel supply.

OK. It sounds too easy. Which means it will probably be harder than one would expect. Now to labor the point should the filters stay on the top of the tank or could the tube be extended down lower to facilitate easier changing of the filter (once a year ???) or could that possibly lead to an unforeseen possibility of a syphoning event of some other strange happening. Probably over-analyzing the job but its easier to ask questions up front than wishing you had asked more later when you are paying your cleanup job fine to the EPA :-{}

Navyjoe, the factory figured all the spill issues out. I'm late to the party, are you putting in a second or modified tank?
I'm leaving mine just as it is. We're talking about a small filter for a lawn mower connected to the vent tip with a short but of neoprene fuel line. Won't even need clamps if you get a snug fit.

I went with a pair of CAT filters back in '09 when I first learned about them. I'm happy with the choice I made. I changed them only when I noticed a significant pressure drop a couple winters ago. I eventually got around to changing out the stock filter later on in the summer of '13 and was wondering why I was about to throw it away.

The stock filter with 50k miles looked the same as the new one I swapped in!! That filter looked like a new one that was dipped in clean fuel even after 4 years!! I might change it out this summer or put it back in and keep the new one as a spare lol!! Perhaps, Wyoming has fuel that is just cleaner than the other 49 states. :-laf

FWIW... I have 104k+ on it now and drive it 60 miles a day and haven't had a fuel related issue since I purchased it new with only 3 miles on the odometer.

No I originally stated the thread to get more info on the Dodge SDF kit. Upon looking at the Dodge flyer on the kit it mentioned filtering the vents. One thing leads to another. I'm just scoping it all out and will probably jump on it this spring before a planned Alaska trip. Stock tank by the way.
