Nissan Titan XD Cummins V8

Took a look at the Cummins in the Nissan Titan today. Interesting set up with the dual turbos.

The truck seems heavy though weighing in with its Aisin transmission just 350 lbs shy of my 2500.

Pulls 4500 lbs less than my derated g56 cummins.

Lists as a half ton, but has a neo HD frame and powertrain. If loaded to the max, it doesn't have the fuel economy you would expect.

I think the V8 cummins like othet V8 diesels has too much weight vs it's power & torque.

I really prefer the I6 design over every V8 diesel I have seen.

No exhaust brake which really makes it undesirable as a towing truck IMHO.

The sticker price ran only 10k-15k less than a similarly equipped true HD truck. I think the price might make it less populsr than the optimistic Nissan folks.

My local dealer has one. It is a top of the line Platinum Reserve with a sticker price of $61000+. The lower end trucks are supposed to be in the low to mid 40's from what I understand.

I paid $40 for mine. List was $49+

I think they may have been concerned about finding someone to buy the G56.

It had the few options I wanted.

How the hell can they get one of those priced up to $78k? Sticker on my Ram was $73,900 and I checked every single option and I couldn't imagine a pickup having any more stuff than mine has.... and the bigger Cummins and bigger Aisin have to be more expensive of options than on the Nissan.

I wonder how much the Aisin option is on the Nissan? Or if it is standard?

I've seen them in the high $50's/low $60's with the Aisin. Not yet seen any in the $40's or $70's

There is a video on you tube showing it getting less than 4 mpg on a 7% grade pulling 11k-12k lbs. And this was NOT a high profile load. It was a loaded flatbed. I think the 6.7 will do a couple of mpg's better than that.
This V8 engine gets it's peak torque & hp between 3000-4000 rpm. I doubt this is a 500,000 mile Cummins like the I6 5.9&6.7

Starting in the low 40's seems decent to me, comparing to the 1/2ton trucks available. Keep in mind it's not a truck your going to pull 15K pounds behind it with, although I bet it would. If you compare it to other 1/2ton trucks MPG, capability, drivability and durability it's going to be popular. As was the original 5.9, it will grow up to be a good platform. Keep in mind, an ECO diesel is priced more and has less HP/TQ than the Titan.

My Tradesman cost about that much... I think Nissan really missed the mark with this truck. Doesn't have great mileage, doesn't have great tow ratings, doesn't have a great price...

I think it's too soon to know what the mileage is. My 6.7L was in the toilet MPG-wise until I got 10k miles on it. Doubt any of these new Nissans have that mileage because they just came out. Also, when going up a grade of course you're going to get terrible mileage... you need a larger sample size than a 1 or 2 mile pull.

I have read or watched plenty of other reviews... they are getting about the same mileage and are more expensive then my Ram 2500.

I looked back at the reviews. The nissan titan was getting 2.9 mpg. The ram 2500 got 4.4 mpg for the same 8 mile run.
The trailer weights were close.The titan had a flatbed that was less than 12,000 lbs with almost negligible wind resistance. The Ram had a 8 ft high trailer to catch the wind and weighed more than 12k.
The titan has a 3.92 rear end. The Ram has a 3.42 rear end.

Both were brand new trucks.

It makes sense to me that the V8 is less efficient with more moving parts, and a shorter stroke.

The longer stroke of the i6 allows the engine to get more energy from the burned fuel and expanding gasses.

I'm wondering if the Aisin in the Titan is not as efficient in locking up as compared to the Ram which seems to lock the torque converter quickly?

I guess now there's a new Cummins on the block, they need a 5.0 V8 Cummins section.

The Aisin in the Titan is the same as the Ram, but without the exhaust brake, the programming is different and it doesn't grade shift for towing like the 3500 Aisin does

Significantly, maybe 30%. I couldn't for the life of me really get over 10mpg in the beginning. 4.10 gears. 10k miles on my truck was like magic.

I dont know where that price came from, but here is the most expensive with all the trimmings including crap like seat belt extenders.

Now I'm never going to buy any one of these vehicles with these options, even when I had my chance back in 2007, when I paid cash for my 07 C&C CTD. (see sig) But when you compare them optioned like I would want, they would be in the $50K range.
