Total mileage on truck is 23,397.When I was at my dealership the service writer, ask me how many miles towing on this number,I stated around 10,000 now.He says that under towing the requirements for axle fluid change is 24,000 miles. The dealership price was 124.00 per axle.I was wondering since I can not drain the fluid without removing the cover's would it pay in the long run to buy two new covers with drain plugs, and service plugs, and do it myself.I would be out two covers for around 245 a piece. Not sure if Geno's covers come with the gaskets too.

After removing the front and rear covers the first time I changed my fluid, I now use a suction pump. Makes the job quick and easy suctioning through the fill hole. Removing the rear differential cover to change the fluid only drained about 4 ounces more than suctioning. The fill plug magnet does a good job of keeping the housing clean of metal debris. $124 per axle is over the top expensive considering how easy the job is and takes a little under 6 quarts to do both axles.

Have yo priced synthetic diff fluid??

I have just done my third axle oil change in 99,000 miles. I usually buy Amsoil Serve Duty differential oil 75W-90 at $13.78 per quart which includes tax and shipping cost. I purchased a case for $165.36 which always leave one full bottle left over. I do both front and rear axles at the same time about every 40,000 miles. I also have the Mag-Hytec differential covers on my truck and this makes changing the axle oil so ease. I open the drain plug and just dump this in to my drain pan with no spills and mess to clean up.

I do not know about others but I do check the oil level in the diffs every once in awhile and the dip stick works great for checking. Another thing I check when on the road and towing my 5er is the rear differential cover temperature, this usually runs about 145F.

Mobil 1 $8.24 and Valvoline SynPower $7.49 at Pepboys when using Code 25PEP online at checkout. AMSOIL and Royal Purple fans disregard this info.

From the owners manual: every 2 years, 20,000K miles or 24,000 KM, if your truck is used for frequent trailer towing.

Are you sure that's not in the "1500" section of the owner's manual???

From the 2015 2500/3500 Diesel Supplement page 329

"Inspect the front and rear axle surfaces. If gear oil leakage is suspected, check the fluid level. If using your vehicle for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing, change the axle fluid. * "

The * reads "* Inspect the front and rear axle surfaces every 20,000miles (32,000 km). If gear oil leakage is suspected, check the fluid level. If using your vehicle for police, taxi, fleet,off-road or frequent trailer towing change the axle fluid every 20,000 miles (32,000 km)."

The 2013 manual reads 15K miles or 24 Km vice 20,000 miles or 32km. only in the updated on line one
however. My printed one that I ordered after buying my truck does not state the above

P.S. I just looked this up and the online manual now states the same as the 2015 manual. Looks like they got them all to read the same
now.

Double check that, Ken. I just looked in my '14 manual......and the 10k intervals are for gasoline 1500's and ecodiesel 1500's.

You have to flip on deeper into the manual where the 2500 / 3500 stuff is........or better yet, go to the diesel supplement and see everything in 15k intervals.

Yes, but it does list that service at 30K, 45K, 60K, 75 K etc etc. SNOKING

Not arguing with you, but no where does this state 15K intervals. The quote above is straight from the 2015 Diesel Supplement table page 329. The table on this page does not list any specific mileage or time interval. It has an asterisk that refers to the note. The note sets the interval of 20K miles or 24 K Km. They have revised the 2013 Diesel Supplement maintenance table with the same words page 157 and 160. The 2014 Diesel Supplement reads the same on Page 331 and 334.

I finalllllly found where you're talking about....but it was on page 336 of the book (not in the chart). Did anyone else notice that the 2015 fluid spec'ed is 75W85 GL5????

That is the new oil that Chrysler wants us to run. Its a little cheaper. The old stuff has been discontinued. I bought some of the new, but was able to find enough of the old 232AA oil to do my first change on both axles. The new oil is that 75W-85 weight and a full synthetic. I don't think they actually changed the viscosity spec, its just an oil that they already had from Fiat to reduce the number of different oils that they have carry in the parts department. My $0.02.

Be careful! There are 2 75W-85 oils in Chrysler's parts system, one for the 1500s and one for the 2500 and 3500s last I knew. I'll post the part number for the right stuff tomorrow.

OK Greg, we are on the same page now. The table has the asterisk, and the note for the asterisk is on the page that follows the table, apparently 336 in your manual. LOL its all good. I keep answering this question about differential service a lot here lately. Cummins 12V98 was telling me it was 24K miles the other day. After much conversation I finally got him to look and and see where it says 15K MILES or 24K Km in the old manual, now superseded. ! LOL
