Whenever I've added 12 qts, it's slightly overfull. Enough to matter? Maybe not. But I put just shy of 12 in now regardless.

So what I am hearing the dipstick is gospel, the 12 quarts is not ?? I want 12 quarts in there . You 6.7 must be different then mine ,I drain , and fill with 12 quarts. It shows pretty much right on the full mark. That has to tell you something, dip stick not right, not drained properly, truck not level ,whatever.

It still makes sense to me to drain completely if thats two hours or overnight, whatever it takes to at least establish where 12 quarts puts you on filling it, if its over the full mark so be it, It's still a 12 quart capacity, and you have only put in 12 quarts.

Changed mine today for the 3rd time. 20450 miles. 12 quarts of Delo LE 15-40, fleetquard filter from the top similar to Ron's method. SNOKING

I've heard this before, its a 12 quart system, Drained properly , and add 12 quarts with the filter. I don't get this 11.5 or 11 plus 24oz. . Its a 12 QUART system dump it in establish on the dipstick ,and maintain accordingly.

3 gallons ,and be done

I guess this is why when I had my 3 free oil changes, it always came back from the dealer with an oil level higher than the "safe zone". I run mine in the safe zone. I put in less than 12 quarts and i run 2 oil filters. I don't like running my cummins too far above the safe zone. Even though i realize there is probably a cushion on that dipstick safe zone.

I drain it, I fill with 12 quarts. The only time I have had it over the safe zone is the one time I had the dealer do the oil change. It was the trucks first oil change. I drained about a quart and half out to get it to the top of the safe zone. It took them less then 20 minutes to do it, I suspect they didn't change the filter being that full of oil. Ran it in there dumped the oil, and threw in 12 quarts.

After that episode , I did my own oil changes, and to date I have done 4 . It's due to do the fifth one. Don't know what to tell you guys doing this 11.5 quart oil changes. I let it drain, put a quart or so in the filter, and the remaining gallon plus 2 more. It hits right on the top of the safe zone or full mark if you will. Maybe the 1 gallon jugs of Rotella 15-40 are not full :D

I would not trust my remote start key fob, or even myself.....

Nick

What is there to not trust on the fob. It takes what three pushes to use the remote start. That would be quite a feat on its own or even in someones pocket.

If worried just remove it from your pocket about the same time as you start draining it . Or better yet hide it from yourself :D:D

Nick, if the hood in not closed, remote start will not start the truck. I leave my hood unlatched. I've tested it it will not start unless its closed.

Thanks, that's good to know. My BIL says his '12 has started on it's own several times with him and the fob in the house. I kind of blew him off as forgetting to shut it off but he locks everything, even when he is home, so maybe it did, I haven't talked to him in a while so I don't know if he got it fixed.

I would not want my truck disabled all night in case I needed it. The whole time I am in the change process I worry about if I put the plug back in and when I start it, did I fill it first?:)

Nick

Hey I'm with you! I check that plug several times and always wonder if I put all 3 gallons in!!!

Thats what I thought, then why bring it up if its a non issue.

One could also say......why challenge it if it is a non-issue? :)

I could add some more detail.....again, even though it really doesn't matter......My '15 uses very little oil. When I did my first two oil changes doing a full 12 qts, it was above the full line as said before. With very little oil consumption, by the time the next oil change came around, it was just slightly below the full mark. It's good to add a little fresh oil between changes to replenish some of the additives. This didn't provide me the opportunity "refresh" the oil unless I wanted to overfill again (per the dipstick).
I've found that the 1/2-3/4 of a quart of oil that I didn't put in, tops it off perfectly by the time the level drops noticeably on the dipstick. Thus "refreshing" the additives a small amount.

An absolute must? No. A "feel good" thing that likely provides a small benefit? Yes.

I just need to ignore these OCD oil threads, been changing oil a long time, I just hear things that , well I will leave it at that.

My 11 HO was exactly the same being about 1/3 qt over using 12 Qts and draining all day or overnight. Just look at the bottom of the pan, there is easily 1/3 qt that cant drain.

And how do you explain why 12 quarts do not overfill mine or others. I never show over the top of the safe zone . I will pay extra attention ,I need to do an oil change in the next week or two , and will see where it sits on the dipstick, but so far its been okay.

I don't know. How do you explain both of my 6.7's are that way and others as well?

With marine engines they tell you to fill it to xx quarts. They you calibrate the shop stick to that level. If RAM days 12 quarts, that is what I put in. 1/3 of a quart might be a 1/16" higher level in the pan. I am no that OCD, to worry about it. Snoking

Some see it different, I too add 12 quarts
