Looking at buying new/used what is best year now

Have an 04.5 that works great getting up there with mileage . Tow a 14k 5er looking at something newer want to make 2 month trip across US . My wish list Aisian trans, 4.10 gears . What year seems to be the best .

Well, I'm kinda in the same position...my early '07 (5.9 with 3.73's...SRW) can pull our new 5th wheel but can't handle the wt....living at 7,300 ft here in Colorado means any direction I head involves up! Just had trailer and truck weighed and I'm over by 1,000 lbs.....so I am looking for a DRW and wondering about a pre DEF (maybe a low mileage 2012) or get newer DEF model? Since we will be full timing for a couple years....even thinking of buying new (can't believe I'm really thinking about that much money!) since we will be living full time with/in truck and trailer...don't want to deal with breakdowns and repair bill! Any thoughts on model years? Anything I should be aware of?

I'm not sure if the DEF eliminated any other smog on the motors such as EGR. Would be cool to see a list of smog devices through the years.

I don't understand the reference to "Pre-Def" as before 2012. My 2009 had a Def tank under the hood... What's the difference?

I would look long and hard for a used truck from 2013 and up for your needs. My son took about 6 months to find one that he bought used in IA about 4 hours away from us. This was in excellent shape with low miles and under $40K for a Big Horn 2500, 6.7L truck.

Are you sure? When was the last time you added DEF to your truck. The 2013 and up trucks with DEF have the fill point next to the diesel fuel fill port behind the fuel door on the driver's side.

Something's afoot! Every online resource and document I have ever seen (Including Ram's) show that trucks did not get the SCR/DEF system until 2013, CC sometime before that.....like 2011. This is why you're getting all of these questions. You sure you weren't filling you washer fluid reservoir with DEF? :-laf

Sounds like gm not Ram Ctd's didn't get def till it was mandated
