Just had the DRL update done to my 2014 Laramie dually at Saitta Trudeau Chrysler in Pahrump...

In the case of my truck with projector headlights, the so called "daytime running lights" turn out to be the orange front marker lights UNDER the headlights and not the actual headlights themselves! That utter disappointment aside, functionally they do work as advertised... the marker lights (a.k.a.: daytime running lights) now come on automatically when the truck is in gear and the parking brake is OFF.

So...

If you have to pay shop time to get this upgrade done (like I did), then I certainly wouldn't waste money on it.

If on the other hand you have a dealer who'll do it for free, then you might as well go for it because it certainly can't hurt anything!

Why didn't you wait till we got there next week and do it for free?

Early adopters always pay the price...

But if you wanted to rotate the rear duals on my truck (swap sides), I'd be happy to let you do that. :)

Was the service contract you got last year just oil changes or was it oil change and tire rotation?

OK... I guess I don't feel so bad after all. :)

Hoopty uses the Amber turn signal bulbs for the DRL function, so do many Freightliner trucks. You are not alone........

Are yours LED where you have the projecter style upscale headlight housing ??

Yes... LED's.

I'm actually warming up to the "look" of having the amber LED's as the DRL's, so now I'm feeling even better about wasting my money on it. :)

Yes... BUT... actually getting the tires rotated at a dealer is a whole 'nother story!

It seems mechanics don't like pulling duals, even if it's only to swap sides. :)

If you're coming to May Madness, I'd love to tell you some of the fun I've had trying to convince the dealerships to rotate the tires.

UPDATE: Found out my insurance company (USAA) offers a discount for adding DRL to Slobber.

Based on the current discount offered, I should get all the money back I paid to Saitta Trudeau Chrysler in only 27.61 years!

Doesn't get any better than that. :)

Had my DRL activated yesterday. I was expecting the amber LED turn signals but it is using the projector headlamps at low power. I would rather have the Amber turn signals, is this an optional?

Thanks

This is the only option. You really want the head lamp for the DRL as this can be seen much further in daylight, even at reduced
power. That is the whole intent for DRL, to be seen by oncoming traffic in daylight. Some newer cars use white LED light surrounds for DRL, which due to intensity can be seen at distance. They do the job but I think they are ugly.

If this results in shortened lamp life, I have not seen it. I had it on my last truck, and went over 200K miles before losing a
headlamp, and it was the high beam not the low one which was the DRL lamp.

Has anybody had this activated in the Lansing, MI area? I would like to take my 2012 in and get them activated, but would like to take it to somebody that has done it before if possible. Thanks.

I have only heard of the amber LED's as DRL. Have never seen anyone with the projectors as DRL's.

Is there a way to enable the DRL , using the amber turn sigs on a projector headlight 2017 Laramie 3500?

This is very interesting. I bought a new 2017 Laramie 5500 in Mar and on the window sticker, it has Dedicated Daytime Running Headlamps $50. They are actually the LED turn signal/parking lights on bright. They do show up pretty good as I saw the first Ram with them a few days ago. My wife's 2019 1500 has white what looks like halo, but not as bright. On my 2009 4500, I wired an ignition rocket switch to use fogs as DRLs. Interesting reading. Cheers, Ron
