SNOKING, Do you have that info about the Valvoline Blue on "Good authority"..? If so, thanks...
That would probably be as good or better than most to continue running. I have had extremely GOOD LUCK running Shell Rotella T-6, so that is what I probably will continue to use..

Actually, after reading this more closely, I think Valvoline only makes a synthetic 5w40.

Do they make a synthetic 15w40 synthetic that I don't know about?

Read the full AAA conventional vs. synthetic report. Unfortunately, the study was conducted using 5w-20 oil in gas/spark engines, not diesel/compression. Would have been nice if they identified the five conventional and five synthetic oils tested since some of the conventional oils performed well in some tests and a few of the synthetics performed well above the other synthetics.

I can't believe I read all 18 pages of this thread. To date.

I used to run Amsoil 15w40 year round but switched to Amsoil 5w40 the last oil change. I change EVERYTHING at 15K. Oil, oil filter, both fuel filters and the air filter.

Oil, air and engine mounted fuel filters are Fleetguard. Body mounted filter (water separator) is Racor. All from Geno's.

Every time it came time for me to change a fluid, it was replaced with Amsoil.

Never did an analysis. It's just that up here we have more cool mornings and days than warm. In fact most mornings, even in July, the heaters kick on for a bit before she starts. Since I change at 15K (I average 25K a year) winter or summer, it made sense to me to switch to 5w.

What's the procedure for switching over to synthetics? I remember when I swapped my former 3rd gen to Amsoil syn, I think I bought a cheap filter, drain a specific amount of oil, added the Amsoil detergent oil and ran it for a specified amount of time, then completely drained the case, and them replaced the oil & filter with synthetic Amsoil brand.....

I've been using the LF16035 oil filters and Rotella T4 15w40 so far. Mainly because T6 synthetic in my parts is nonexistent and Valvoline Blue is hard to come by as well.

I don't feel the need to pony up for Amsoil anymore, but I would certainly entertain synthetic oils.

Change it and the filter - drive on! Old legends are hard to get past at times. RAM list two oil types and does not specify any trickery in switching between them.

We can remember the days of the start on Mobil 1, where you had to break in the engine and seat the rings before switching to it. I bought a used 76 K20 Chevy to burned oil. At 84K it still had the hone marks on the cylinder walls. I think the owner switched to Mobil 1 to soon. Engines and rings today do not seem to have that issue. I honed the cylinders with a ball hone and put new steel rings in it and it quit using oil.

The new RAM six month short cycle for many low mileage users points them to just using 15W-40.

I was just on the Amsoil site, and they recommend engine flush treatment for high mileage vehicles when switching over to synthetic. I think my 3rd gen was close to 200k when I switched. That must be why I remember doing the engine flush back then.

I run Rotella T5 10W-30, MoPar MO-285 oil filter, and change both with a sample every 10,000 - 12,000 miles. All Mobil/Delo "Accutrack" samples have come back with parameters in the "green". I'll attach a copy of my recent one...

My dealer has Pennzoil Ultra advertisements all over their service area. And it appears that's all that they use. There was a sign thay said they use it "exclusively". So i was assuming they were using Pennzoil branded Ultra for my free oil changes. But since i didn't see them actually put it in..... Not sure what they were using. But now that i look at my receipt..... The receipt says "Pennzoil "

I didn't think Pennsoil Ultra had a diesel oil?
