i just recently put a dually rear end under my d250. it has 4.10 gears and isn’t limited slip or posi. i want 3.54s limit slip or posi in, yes i know that’s not what i want for pulling, but it’s a daily driver. i put the duals on it for looks. i have the srw axle but the guy at the shop says if he puts the gears out of it in the dually, the gears will start to sing. is he wrong and i can put the gears in it? or do i need to buy a whole new gear setup? if i need new gears where do i get them?

Dana gear sets are commodity, they are everywhere. Mechanic is correct, run a chance of getting gear noise when switching them from case to case unless an obnoxious amount of time is spent match pattern. Even then it may not work, if you are ok with some whine then swap the gears.

I've setup quite a few used gear sets for my own stuff. They suck to setup compared to new, more time consuming. But it can be done correctly. However, the extra labor to set them up right when you're paying someone, can quickly outweigh the cost of new gears.

I won't setup used gears for paying customers. I also wont setup gears for customers that want to run the old bearings.

The old gears are the ring and pinion. Axle gear replacement is complicated and Dana Axles are the worst of the bunch. If you buy new gears, use Dana parts, they fit and are easier to set up. None are easy for a first timer. Axle repair mechanics are rare so be sure they know what they are doing. I do not recommend that you do it.

However, with all that said, if it were mine I would change them. As long as everything is in good shape you can change them with common hand tools. If anything at all needs new parts, than all bets are off, special tools are required and you need to know from scratch how to set one up.

i’m not going to do it on my own. i just want the 3.54 limit slip gears in my dually rear ended. i have 4.10 open in them now. i have my 3/4 rear end and i’m just trying to get to the bottom of whether or not i can use the gears out of my 3/4 ton rear end in the 1 ton

Yes, as long as they are both D-70's.

You are welcome. The key for using a used set, is you need to use everything from the donor axle that is part of the ring & pinion set. All bearing races and shim packs. Since it is used, it has to go back with the exact same components. Do not try and change the carrier bearing preload, pattern (pinion depth) or the back lash. You can adjust the pinion bearing preload if it is too loose or too tight with a shim adjustment without changing anything with the pinion/ring gear match. Keep in mind a slightly loose bearing will last a long time, a tight one will fail immediately.
