Yes, had this pop up last year in the middle of an 8,000 mile trip, towing the 5th wheel. Happened 2 or 3 times in two days. Turned it off (truck) and then back on and it went away each time. No 4wd used during the trip. Has not happened since then.

Do you have the dial (knob) selector or the stick shift selector?

mine would flash on when driving in rain. so I cleaned out sensor plug and sealed with electrical
connection grease. Seems good so far.

Same here...towing my TT...happened 2 days back to back and nothing since then. Everything seems to be working ok. Taking my truck in for the water pump recall next week, will have them check it out.

Not sure if related or not...on the same trip had issues with the driver and passenger side windows not auto going up. Not at the same time though. Both work ok now.

Yes I have the dial knob selector. Funny as it was raining when it happened. Sounds like a electrical connection issue

Yeah, I have the shifter (stick shift 4x4 engager) and I think it is a studier than the electronic. Mine has a physical linkage rather than electric engagement.

I believe the CAD actuator is also a cause (most common too?) for the service 4wd system message.....which is unrelated to the type of T-case shift mechanism.

Oh yeah. Forgot about that. They started CAD (actually brought it back) in 2014. So I don't have that.... I don't think

Ok well I found the problem. It was the batteries or actually one of them. I went out to start the truck and click.
So, after putting the charger on and getting it started, went to get new batteries. One tested bad, one still good, I still replaced both. No more service 4wd system light. Low voltage gremlin I am sure was the cause

I have gone through 4 actuators since I have had this truck new. Yes "4" that's 5 counting the original one. Each time they went out I wasn't even using 4 wheel drive. Mostly on long trips when they went. Dealer can't figure out why and Chrysler doesn't seem to care. They just keep replacing them until the warranty runs out and then you are on your own. Good luck.

Well today it rained again and no more problems. I have not had the problem since I put in new batteries last Thursday.
I think I am lucky on this one. I just ran out of warranty as I went above 100k miles two weeks ago

Back from the dealer...they found no issues/codes/etc. concerning the 4WD needs service warning. No more warnings since late July...see what happens.

I had this warning intermittently as well. It ended up being the CAD actuator on the front axle, as I suspected. Replaced under warranty and it's never come back.
