Checking rail fuel pressure

ttva and fuel filter housing questions

With a recent problem finding filters for oil and Fuel, Im looking to change my Air Dog 100 with something as reliable as the AD 100 has been WITHOUT the filter/separator. I use a Baldwin BF1212 to pre-fillter fuel from my AUX tank to the OEM tank and ONLY fuel the truck through the AUX tank. The 1212 is a 20 mic filter but has excellent water separator properties. I use the factory eng mounted fuel filter and before fuel hits the CP3 its ran into a CAT 1R 0750.

The AD100 has done its job its been on the truck from about 20K when the 04.5 had the Dodge lift pump debacle, fix was to put it in the fuel tank WHICH IS NOT AN OPTION. The truck is and will remain STOCK in Horsepower.

I have heard that the Raptor pump made by AD isn't like the older ones like my AD has on it and are prone to failure so its a game of, fuel pump Roulette as to where & when it leaves a person stranded.

any ideas would be appreciated

I’ve only changed my lift pump once, and it really hadn’t quit. I suspected it was getting weak. I don’t think there’s an issue if you’re staying stock.
I think that belt drive thing is nifty, but it’s too much of a departure, and it seems like you still need an electric pump to cold start with.

I noticed the need for a AUX starting fuel pump and I'm not sure that the idea of where it mounts is a good one with road garbage taking a wack at it.

Make a skid plate. Diesel engines have started on mechanical pumps forever. The kit I had in my hands used the on filter pump as a primer and backup pump. I forget what was in the way of a old school 12v style mechanical lift pump on my 2003. Aftermarket cam may have the lobe on it - I am fuzzy on that as well.

Big, if you don't mind me asking, why did you not want the in tank OEM pump?
Just another task to drop the tank when it fails, the way I see fixes by Dealer Manufactures is IT'S THE EASIEST, CHEAPEST WAY TO FIX ANY PROBLEM THAT MAY LAST UNTIL IT'S OFF WARRANTY AND THEN ITS THE OWNERS PROBLEM AND EXPENSE TO FIX IT.

AGAIN!!!

I understand your point. The good news on the OEM in tank pumps on these trucks is that they are stone reliable. I don't know of anyone that has had a failure.

My MAIN CONCERN is filtration. I don't know if the in-tank pump set up could push fuel through at least my CAT 1R 0750 filter. Being in the Petrochemical LP Division I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDED that there isn't a line of not only Diesel but Gas cars with fuel quality related problems leading away from just about all fuel stations.

On my '07 and on the old '04.5, the in tank pump pushed through the factory filter and a fleetguard FF5320 before the CP3 with no issue. The in tank pump conversion on the 04.5 went about 300K and my '07 has approx 140K on that setup.

Here is the setup I have on my '07. The auxiliary filter is mounted between the factory filter and the CP3. The factory in tank pump gives me approx 9psi fuel pressure at idle and 5-5.5 psi at WOT with a heavy trailer. My pressure gauge is at the CP3 inlet.

Again, absolutely not trying to sell you on the OEM setup. But, you will have absolutely no issues with it if you would decided to go that route.

Thanks jgillott looks good, Ill take a good look at the in-tank, several of the wrenches at work have volunteered to do the install of whatever system I should come up with.

Big; I too have the Glacier Diesel Big Line Kit on my truck. I installed this kit, Mar 0f 2010 after the primary fuel filter but ahead of the CP3 pump.

I also use the stock Fleetguard fuel filter FF43258 which I purchase from Geno's Garage. I do purchase three filters of each part number to spread out the shipping cost. I have run this way for over 90K+ miles with no issues. The primary filter is changed every 15K and the secondary is changed every 30K miles. I have towed my 5er from UT to FL and up to ME using mainly truck stops for my fuel needs. I have never had any issues (knock on wood) with the fuel delivery to my engine. I do carry one extra fuel filter for both filters in my truck all of the time but so, far they are just dead weight.

I see you guys spinning 5320. So am I, but I just decided to try the FF5814, which is supposed to be a better, stratapore media unit. After all, you want the best as a secondary, right?

I have no specific reason other than that is what I ran from the beginning and have just continued with the same over the years. I had purchased a dozen of them on sale at one point. I have a few left but would certainly consider going to a different one when my supply runs out if there is something better out there.

Cat 1R 0750 Advanced is 2 mic absolute a couple of guys at work are into Tractor Pulling & Diesel Truck Drag racing said that Donaldson has an equivalent to the cat specs and their made here in IN, I don't know about the filter head being the same mine was bought from a Class 8 truck dealer and a mount was made. I like the Cat filter have seen them at MANY truck stops

Its mainly the filters that are born to an unmarried couple (TDR won't allow the use of the word that may OFFEND the faint of heart) starts with a B that I'm trying to get away from. The only reason I went with the Air Dog 100 in the first place was that the factory POS took a dive on me and we were going on vacation its all I could get in a hurry that was BOLT-ON AND PLAY

I am certainly not a filter expert. I'll have to do some research in to these other available filters and see what fits my GDP filter head.
