Hey all, I was changing my fuel filters and had a bit of a spill. When the thought came into my tiny brain "what if this thing caught fire"...would the small 2lb ABC extinguisher work. Should I have 1 or even 2 in my truck. And if so, what TYPE? I admit I don't know squat about diesel or gas fires, and which type extinguisher to use. C02? Foam, Std ABC? I did some research and it is a mixed bag. Some say "LET IT BURN". :( What do you guys think?

Agree. You’ll have a tough time igniting Diesel as compared to Gasoline. That said, it’s good to have an extinguisher. Halon was the best, but I don’t think those are available anymore. I don’t know beyond a good size ABC unit.

I keep a 5lb ABC handy, couple 2 1/2 in motorhome. No fires I couldn't handle in shop for 40 years. Beyond that.....run!
Nah, really, just need to keep a cool head and not freak out. Always had to have 2-5lbs in semi as I hauled haz-mat, but when annual training came up.....always told em, I ain't a fire fighter, pull the release on the king pin and pull away. LOL!

"let it burn" if fully insured and you like the newest model.....LOL!

I hate to admit that I thought the same thing.

Diesel is no where near as volatile as gasoline but once its lit, its lit. When i burn my annual brush pile, I throw sawdust thats been soaked in diesel.....it gets the fire burning well.

What.....no tires? Wait a minute......that is for them anti-protest everything folks, I forget.

Do not have or use ABC anymore, if used the vehicle and everything around will be trash in a short amount of time, the powder is very aggressive against metals and can't be wash of properly.

I switched to foam extinguishers everywhere, nowadays the can be stored and used down to -30°C.
So there is no need anymore for Powder.

Kinda like when they go to a house fire......usually way more water damage than actual fire damage.

No doubt. In my almost 20 years in the fire service, I've put the hurt to lot's of homes. And to make matters even worse, all of our cross lays lines and hotel packs are smooth bore nozzles now. I can punch some serious holes now

Not that you shouldn’t be prepared for all situations, but in all my years I’ve never seen diesel fuel from something like your filter change catch fire. In my experience, igniting diesel takes quite an effort. Now, once it is lit, yes, she’ll burn. It takes a match or a lighter directly on it several seconds to ignite. A spark won’t do it. It might ignite fairly quickly if, say, a high pressure line ruptured and sprayed fuel on a very hot exhaust housing or manifold.
