Hi everyone,
I have a 2017 2500 Laramie 4x4
Two times now it has started the regen process and it continued even while the truck was stopped, at idle and in park. The RPM's would increase and the regen continued once I took my foot off the brake pedal.
I have a Edge product that tells me when it is in regen mode.

I thought these trucks were only supposed to do this while the truck was in gear and moving?

No performance mods, all stock.
What am I missing?

Thanks
Jason

Once the system starts an “Active” regent it will go through the full cycle even when parked as long as you don’t shut down the engine. Depending how far through the regen cycle is when you shut down the system will ether pick up where you left off or if cycle was almost done it may not re start the cycle. If you do more highway and work the engine harder the more passive regen’s and less active regen cycles you’ll have. Passives don’t waste fuel like actives do.

When my truck has been in active regen the regen stops as soon as I put it in park, it will then start again as soon as I go back to drive.

I also haven’t seen the rpms increase, so that could be a different level of regen that won’t stop in Park, such as a stationary regen.

How long were you idling for? What kind of driving have you been doing?

You aren’t missing anything. They’ve been doing passive regen for years now as far as I know.

That's not a passive regen. A passive regen is when the engine is being worked hard enough (towing etc) that it is generating enough of its own heat to burn out the soot in the DPF. So when a passive regen occurs, the engine (fueling/pcm) isn't doing anything out of the ordinary (not adding additional fuel).

Ok, my misunderstanding. I was under the impression that the aftertreatment engineers had, after many years, programmed the Cummins so they could perform a regen in idle and slower speeds but it would be a less aggressive version of the regen's that happen at highway speeds. It was my understanding they called these passive regens.

The software does allow for regens to occur in park or at idle, but they are active and not part of the standard regen process. It took until around MY09 for the software to come out, but it was retroactive on all 6.7’s. I think they called it net reduction.

The 13+ motors will do it too, but I’m not sure they do it the same. I’ve read some different things on them.

The active regen programming on my 2013 has actually changed with the flashes performed on it. Original programming actually activated the exhaust brake and i heard the hissing of exhaust brake as the EB applied a load to thw engone. It doesn't do that any more.
