I believe that my 1991 D250 was supposed to have a bed mounted spare tire bracket. It didn't come with it so I have keep the spare in the bed. Anyway I am going to carry a camper in the bed so I need an alternate spare mounting location. Anybody have a solution to this problem? Is there a way to mount a tire under the truck with a winch like some later trucks?

Any help is appreciated...…...John

My 91.5 D-250 has a spare mount under the bed, oem. It is a manual lift tho. I have it off because it is too heavy for me to use. Here is a picture of the carrier.

Thanks for the info. and the pictures. I am attaching a picture of my trucks underside. There seems to be room for a carrier like you have. There does not seem to be any evidence that there was ever a carrier mounted to my truck. I too do not know how I would ever get a spare up or down from that position. The tires weigh a ton!

By the way, my truck is a 1991, not a 1991.5, mine does not have an intercooler or any electronic controls. Perhaps the spare tire location was one of the changes they made between the models?

As always, late to the party. IIRC, when I ordered a 1992 you had to choose at least a spare tire OR a rear bumper, and I though the spare tire would be more useful. And FWIW, my spare carrier looks the same as Nick's.

If you can fabricate, you could use the later winch style spare tire lift from the 2nd and 3rd gen trucks (they attach with three bolts)...you simply got to make the crossmember. I did that myself for a 74 power wagon...
