Dave Gorend hey? I went to his shop and had a trans built for towing by him 8 years ago. So I would take his word on the subject as gospel.
Thanks for the input guys. My stress levels are way down now. Only problem is I can't find any ATF+4 in gallons, I want 2, before I do an oil change. Why? 2 days ago I spent 15 minutes backing my fiver up my steep driveway, and trying to get the wheels within an inch or so of perfect I started getting alarms on my Edge monitor. TFT was showing as 140, and deep pan sensor showed 130 for about 5-10 minutes max. Scared me, as I am getting ready for a 1000 mile towing vacation, and didn't want any trans issues. Soon as I unhooked I took the truck out on the road and cooled down the trans fluid to 195 in 5 miles, in 100F temps outside.
Iam thinking about just taking along 8 qts of ATF+4 and a new 3 gallon sealable catch pan. Then if I sense any issues I can always just drain the pan and install new fluid, in a campground if necessary.
The current fluid has about 10K towing miles, with a double deep MagHytec pan. Oil smells a little off sweet, but not burnt yet.
How does my plan sound?
