Not totally new to diesels, but it's been a while

This being my first post, I’m sure I’m repeating something that’s been answered, but here goes.

I’m reading that a “lubricant” should be added to the fuel in my 2017 (just traded my Tundra for it) RAM Diesel. The former owner didn’t mention he had done that but I’d like to learn more from this group of diesel aficionados.

I also read that an additional fuel filter might be in order, so being unable to do that myself, a cost estimate might help as well.

Thanks!

Welcome David! And Congrats on your new truck!

Fuel additives and extra filtration is a highly debatable subject here. My suggestion is to read up on the vast amount of threads already posted here so you go educate yourself on the options, facts, and opinions.

Personally I wouldn't change your factory filtration. Just stick with filters from Mopar or Fleetgaurd from Geno's Garage. You won't find better folks or better prices for quality parts, supplies, tools, or accessories for your Cummins Turbo Diesel.

Additives? This is a very heated subject here. Personally I don't use much or see the need for them. But If I do use them, there are only two, and they are rarely found in box stores. I use Opti-Lube or Stanadyne. Both are proven true performers. I won't ever buy any additives that contain alcohol in them, and lots of them do, especially the ones found on box store and auto parts store shelves. This is where research on you part will go a long way. There are far more opinions than facts when it comes to additives. Be careful and prepare to upset folks. It almost always happens. Take it with a grain of salt sir.

Welcome!

The stock fuel filtration system is one of the best ones out there, so save your money. When the time comes to change the filters get the OE ones and not the cheaper ones, plan to spend around $100 for just the filters.

Fuel additives are not needed, but don't hurt. I will occasionally add a fuel treatment and/or cold flow improver. I don't do it every tank or even on a prescribed regiment, just occasionally.

We need to point out that the older trucks lacked at the filtration front, that killed then the injection system.
On the Gen4 like the TO has the filtration system is up the task and don't need any additional help.

I use Power Service from time to time when I think my old Horse turns into Sir Smoke a Lot.

yeah.. welcome... There is likely literally nothing this community can't help you solve, think thru, or best case make fun of.... TDR has saved me hours of aggravation and useless troubleshooting as there is always a member who has been there dun that! I will say if you work on your own stuff then factory manual is worth it, I have the 2000+ page manual for my 04' and used it all the time, I plan to get the one for my 20' soon.
