Good info here, right you sold your HEMI last year, i forgot about this. So no test possible anymore with a 5W-30 to figure out if even a 6.4 would calm down with it.

Like said, the 5.7 MDS is as seemless, one doesn't even know it exists.
The 6.4 is a whole other story from whatbi learned now.
That guids me to the conclusion that Chrysler did NOT change the Engine mechanical for the use of that heavy weight oil. They just drop it in and call it a day, looks like.
Now the owners are plagued with tiks and MDS noise.

What a shame...

Not that it matters, but you could tell MDS was active or not if you activated the notification in the settings. But you could also hear it if you paid attention. Beyond that on my 6.4, you couldn’t tell MDS was active. You had to be going light cruise with light throttle. It was very quiet and subtle.

I agree, it seemed more gimmick than anything else. You practically had to have very little to no throttle input for it to work and have any effect on MPG.

Ozy, just to clarify, there are many, many 5.7 Hemis that tick. It's not just a 6.4 thing.

Right. I was more into the MDS in my thinking.
So I'm happy with my Durango, it's quiet, always.
I run the specified 5W-20 full synthetic.
Even with continuous full throttle at 130mph on the german autobahn till the tank is down - that's what always killed US cars in the past. Couldn't take that.
I say that Hemi is a good engine.

I didn't read all 124 replies so forgive me if someone already said it but what about a tuner to turn off the MDS? I had a 2014 with the 6.4L and bought a tuner for it to turn off the MDS, add some additional throttle response (remap of the throttle curve), and make the shifting more sporty. It also added more power and torque (but it still wasn't enough).

Was amusing to see my 6sp 6.4 in MDS mode pulling some wagons yesterday. We dont have a far ride to get them to the barn.

Did 450 bales yesterday smaller 2nd cutting, have maybe 2 or 3 wagons today.

Mine is still under the original warranty and I have a 7yr 125k mopar warranty. Forget if it's exactly MaxCare. They say they prorate it if unused so I did not see a major down side.

I run the 0w40 because they said keep your records if you have issues, it ticks after a while when the oil gets some miles on it, will keep an eye on it as I just changed the oil late last week.

I'm still on the CTD as the next vehicle the 7.3 did not seem to be all that much better number wise then a new 6.4 2500 gasser. In general I would have loved the extra towing rating its up almost 2k from my 2018. I never read what they changed to get the added capability on the 2500s.

Not having the 8sp they could have missed the boat on the first round of MDS on the 8sp and have some work to do. My 6sp is not perfect but gets the job done.

He said there isn't a tuner for the 2019 yet.

6.4 $69 - $71k ouch no limited slip rears IDK, Transforce AT's...... even at the $54k for the gasser Ford.

That 6.4 Firestone Transforce AT, I was not too impressed with my stock set of those, not sure if others had better luck with theirs? I could just be hard on tires and its user caused.

CTD to 7.3, its basically similar to the 6.4 except some unknown new issues who knows what they will be with the 7.3 they never get these perfect, and they claim there is a engine in that compartment somewhere, look at all that crap in the engine bay.

Going back to the OP thread question and having 32k miles on my 6.4, I would go to a CTD vs a 7.3, for the CTD after that video I'm sticking with Tradesman trim and Work Vinyl, rubber mat floor, LSD rears, mine is a work truck anyway. Would spring for some auto steps.

"There is a(n) engine in that compartment somewhere" I went to test the battery maintainer I installed on the new Ford Edge the other day. Guess what? There is no where you can see the ground around the engine to drop the power cord out of the engine bay. So it is going to have to come out the corner of the hood when we store the vehicle for the winter. All you see is a sea of stuff, there are two turbos hidden in there somewhere to boot.

What year Durango is this?
130mph, that would be an experience!
