Truck surging at 50

Falling out of OD and trans temp lightcoming on

So I just ordered the Smarty s03 programmer for my 2002 Cummins after hearing many great things about it, currently running the Edge EZ that was on the truck when I bought it. I'm curious what best level to run the tune on my stock automatic 47RE transmission (which are obviously notorious for being crap) and not risk blowing it soon after installing the chip. Any way I could use a custom tune that gets me good power, mpg, and is easy on the trans? Anything helps!

From day one it was stated that the 47RE stock could handle one small upgrade to power. Like RV275 injectors or an EZ Edge but not both. If you want to build HP and TQ the first step is to build the transmission! Or you can play around with the Smarty and shortly there after build the custom transmission. Your choice in the order you want to do it. I build my 2001.5 transmission at DTT in 2004 and had them install Jammer 1 injectors and an EDGE Comp in the EZ mode all in a single visit to the DTT Shop in Canada.

Yep, the trans is on my todo list. I might be swapping it out with a competition built trans coming off a 2003, just need to make sure it'll fit or if we need to get a manual valve body. If that doesn't work out I'll be in the market for either getting a built trans or swapping out old parts with performance parts in my current trans. Was just curious if running this tuner before building the trans was a good idea. I could always hold it until its ready.

60 hp might be high with the big tires and stock gearing. You can program stock torque management which will cause the power to come on slower. You've used 60 hp with the Edge but it may have put a strain on the trans up till now. Gauges and a new trans regardless is in your future.

So I would guess best option is to wait for a built transmission that can handle the added power? I've heard from Smarty the safest level to run on stock automatic trans is #3 which is 60hp increase with added timing. Its definitely not too much and timing is good, it'd be like running the edge.

Depends on the trans condition. Smarty has the torque management you can adjust though.
I'd like to say my trans is in good shape, only 116k miles, the shifting is always smooth and never slips. I think I'll use the safe level of the Smarty and make sure to adjust the torque level to a good one

Yeah, just take it easy with the throttle and put some money away.
Yeah I think I'll use the recommended level that's safest for my trans according to Smarty and start looking into a new trans because I've been saving for it for quite a while now and have plenty enough in case things go south quick

I wish I got 116K from a stock trans. Smarty says SW3, but thats pushing it IMO. My 98 held up good til it was sold around 100k, but I kept it at stock power.
