I am looking at full synthetic AMSOIL, LUCAS, and ROYAL PURPLE oils. Trying to see which is the better value for my new 2022 Ram. Curious what the group is using for engine oil. Plus are y'all using 10W30 or 15W40?

In my 01 I used amsoil 15w40 hdd and marine iirc worked fine for the 375lk miles I drove it. However that oil is not approved for a 2022 or anything past 2006. Nor do I think any 15w-40 is approved for a 2022. I think options are 10w-30 or 5w-40. I am sure the companies you listed have oils that will work I know amsoil does.
I have no experience with lucas or royal purple.

On my 2017 I used shell rotella t6 synthetic 15w-40 seemed totally fine but it only had 145k on it when I moved up to a 2022.

The engines from 2019-2022 (current) I think is the changeover no longer can use 15w-40 and require either 10w-30 or 5w-40. I have a few free oil changes on my 2022 so I have not had to buy any oil for the oil changes yet. I know last time I went in dealer put in shell rotella t6 5w-40 at least that is what was on the paperwork they gave me when I left.

Actually the 2007's that were built in 2006 with the 5.9 could run the 15-40 Diesel and Marine.

If you are deleted you can run it in any of the 2007.5-2022 trucks.

Sure can’t. 07.5-18 for sure, but the reason you can’t run it in 19+ is the hydraulic lifters, not the emissions.

But then one would ask why? The DME is a better oil than the AME, and cheaper.

Stand corrected on the 19-22. Not so sure the DME is better.

Please explain why you would run 5-40 over 10-30 in your 22.

I ran DME and AME in my 05. The DME held pressure better, and ran cooler, when working the motor hard. It also has a better additive package for ULSD. Not to mention it’s cheaper. AME was better when CJ was the spec, but now that we have CK there isn’t a lot of reason to run CI oils.

Winter operation. I won’t be running the signature series in my 22, no cost benefit, and in the standard series the 5w-40 still has a better pour point. It’s not uncommon for the truck to see sub-zero, and to often be cold soaked at those temps. I’ll be getting max care and don’t want to answer any questions on viscosity if they come up.

Additionally, the 40wt does have better protection when working the motor hard. While the 19+ doesn’t have flat tappets, what really needed the 40wt, there are still many components of the engine that will benefit from a thicker oil with better high temp shear properties.

So between 5w-40 and 10w-30 I prefer the 5w-40 for my use. On the flip side there are several reasons I ran the 15w-40 over the 5w-40 on my ‘05 and ‘18, but that won’t be an option on the ‘22.

That being said, the cheapest 10w-30 diesel oil you can find will likely not have any issues compared to the most expensive one. Modern oils, even cheap ones, are pretty impressive.

This is straight out of the Cummins Manual on our ‘22 model buses with the 6.7.

The 6.7 powerstroke reads similar. 10w-30 normal, 15w-40 severe, 5w-40 cold winter.

I wonder if it's because the bus has a lower, max high rpm? I assume it is around 2600 rpm? Also lower HP/TQ overall.?

I thought the potential for damage was at startup, since at operating temp the 40 weights are similar.

I run 5-40 Valvoline Blue .Mobil, Dello ,Shell and all the rest are good oils . No one has a secret formula . You can bet their labs test their oil against the others on the market and break down their additive packages do wear test comparisons etc. It all boils down to marketing hype . Just like buying trucks . It's all in the branding.

OK, curious. On a 2017, why cant you run 15-40 Rotella T6? little confused by some of the replies.

Read the TSB (thanks for posting) clarified it for me.
