OK, curious. On a 2017, why cant you run 15-40 Rotella T6? little confused by some of the replies.
Read the TSB (thanks for posting) clarified it for me.
Why can't you?

You can. The 10w-30 is for 19 and newer. 18 and older, 15w-40 or 5w-40.Why can't you?

Yep, I run full synthetic 15w-40 in my '18. My '22 will get full synthetic 5w-40.
Not sure why anyone would run 5-40 in a 19 up instead of 10-30.
sag2 I would like your opinion on this please!
06 on 5W??? Really don't get that. 115k on most any oil in an 06 is not enough time to hurt that engine. Only way to tell is tearing down the engine of maybe a sample to Blackstone.

If mine was a 19+ I would run 5w-40 as it is acceptable for all temps. I run the same in the 18 for the same reason. One oil year round just makes life simple. Not sure why anyone would run 5-40 in a 19 up instead of 10-30.

What if you never see starts in 0 F weather?
My 22 will get 5w40 synthetic come Monday morning, I tell them my old 06 ran for over 115K on 5w oil in the hot Midwest summers without problems, I still get told how I'm wasting $$$, that there is no reason to use fancy synthetic oil as its a waste of $$ an that Dino oil has worked well for millions of miles in Cummins engines.
Yes, they are mostly just quoting a fact. Where they go wrong, is pushing their agenda. We have a choice here and can use either or. Synthetic is about twice the money. However, if you only change oil once a year it is not that big a deal. For me, the difference in cost is substantial. Most of my Cummins trucks are older, so oil changes about every 5k miles. About 900k miles on the three, plus my off highway vehicles (4).
My guess is synthetic users also go to StarbucksI am fine with plain ole cafe coffee
I always figured Red Bull and all those energy drinks are also synthetic![]()
So what, the owners manual list 5w-40 as being acceptable for All Temps, that means even if you never see a temp below zero and if I'm wrong I'm sure I will be corrected shortly.
For fun lookup what oil is listed for a 19+ 6.7 on AMZ/OIL's site. If you look further they say 10W-30 (Above -18)
5W-40 (Below -18)
I know what oil I would run!!!
