The music on his CD's is the same weither it comes straight off the CD's, or if the CD's are ripped and the music placed on a SD card.

Well, an SD card is outdated technology now just like CD'S.

On my wife's car a 2021 model, which has Apple Car Play you either use the radio, phone or a Flash Drive that fits into the USB port, to play music. No slot anywhere for an SD card. In fact, it is far easier to download music to your phone and play this thru the Bluetooth on the phone to your radio. I have a 2008, truck that plays CD's, but I use a Bluetooth repeater now that allows me to access the music on my phone. Far easier than ripping music to your computer and then transferring to a media device.

The problem with ripping a CD 's to a SD card/Flash Drive. Is first you need a computer, now you need a program that allows you to rip a CD + you need to know how to do this. A lot of older adults are afraid of Computers and won't access one or do not own one.

All I know is that if I am using my phone for music in my truck (which is rare) I can tell a sound quality difference between using BT and using the Aux cord.

I have no idea what BT version my 2015 utilizes however.

BT 4.0 maybe 4.1 probably.
5.0 was implemented in 2016, we are now at 5.3 that came 2019.
That's the standards, you would have to check your owners manual, that should tell you which one exactly RAM used. We all know that car manufacturers are often way behind if it comes to new technology standards.

My headphone has 5.3 and it's great, I can't tell a difference between wired or BT.

You must have better hearing than my hearing is, or maybe I am so used to listening to Bluetooth devices that they all sound the same to me. Granted I am a slightly older gentleman and my hearing maybe going slightly. I can tell no difference in sound quality between my wife's car and my truck, nor my Apple Ear pods. I also have Bluetooth ear protectors for power tools and Bluetooth shop speakers they all sound the same in quality. Both of our I-phones are new this year so, maybe that helps too.

Slightly technology related...I recently drove a new truck without a "lighter" or 12V socket, leaving nowhere to plug in my (only 3 years old) dash cam, detector, etc., so I'm wondering if any of you have found a good USB > socket converter?

What year was the truck? I haven’t seen one without a 12V socket.

2022 Silverado 1500...we couldn't find one in dash, console, gloveboxes, rear seat, etc. It didn't have an owner's manual either so there could be a socket...

I wired in a device that Geno's garage used to sell so I could run an auxiliary lighter for my needs. It was called a Painless wiring Harness 3-circuit. This would allow you to run fused wiring right from the battery. It's mounted in the engine bay close to one of the batterie. The device has a 30-amp circuit breaker and slots for fusses to each connector point for wiring. It is sealed against the weather. You may want to contact Geno's garage to see if they still have this? I than added a 12V lighter under the dash for additional electrical needs on my truck. I also run my air compressor for my air bags from this device too.

@Topzide
Thanks for the link but I have that. I need basically the reverse...something that plugs into a USB port and provides a female socket. My dashcam claims to run on 5V 2A but the only (cheap, China) converter I tried so far couldn't keep up with it.
@Jim W Thanks for that. My cars are hardwired, but this application is for rentals/loaners where I might just need the camera a/o detector for a day or few.

@AnonEd, That is a female USB socket. If your dash cam wire has a 12v power plug on it, you can't convert USB to work. The 12v plug has circuity to reduce voltage. What you would need is a new cord to dash cam. I ordered a longer cord and removed the 12v plug, kept the circuit and hardwired into a fuse block. They also make a USB to mini or micro USB in long lengths. Just get the right end for your dash cam. Crazy they didn't provide 12v power ports!

What are you running for a converter?

The USB port is 10W, if you convert it to anything else it will reduce the available power... but the USB port is 2A @ 5V, so you shouldn't need a converter just the proper plug.

I'm not following what you think you need to make your dashcam work.

Try a different, quality USB wire. It needed a long time for me to figure out that they are NOT all equal. A good one can move up to 100w of Power where a cheap ine fails greatly - like the one that you tried with your cam. A dash USB outlet has plenty of power to run a dashcam.

I got myself this smart little device then, USB Power Meter Testers NO Amazon Affliate Links Allowed.d/5sHrRUu now I check every wire I buy with my tablet and a known good power source. More then half of the wires go back because they can't move the load.
