Hi all! Been a long time lurker of TDR since I was much younger back when the Internet (Compuserv/Prodigy days) wasn't like how it is now.
Back in 2002 we bought a Dodge RAM 2500 with the 5.9l Cummins, automatic and it was only 2wd. Primarily used it as a daily driver and what not. We got it up to ~190,000 miles and we traded it for a Jeep Compass in 2007. I had huge regrets over it. Although it was needing some engine and suspension work. Great, reliable truck. Miss it a lot. Before that we had a 1992 F250 diesel, then went to a Ranger, then a F150, then to the RAM 2500... something to that effect...
I kept fixing Jeep up until this year when it almost caught fire while I went into a gas station to get some food. The Jeep had a bunch of electrical problems due to salt corrosion from where I live. I was hesitant to park it in my garage because I was afraid it would go up one night while I was in bed sleeping. Not a good feeling.
After doing some research and what not, I was on the fence of a 2020 RAM 2500 with the 6.7l Cummins or a 2020 RAM 1500 with the EcoDiesel. I also test drove other makes like Ford and GM products, and I liked the design and feeling of the RAM trucks. Both trucks I narrowed down had 51k miles on them. After driving both and weighing the pros and cons, I went with the EcoDiesel and it was $10k less than the RAM 2500. I also got an extended 7 year/125,000 mile warranty $0 deductable through my local RAM dealer. The truck I got has the Gen 3 EcoD engine and the ZF 8HP75. Speaking of which, is the reason why I didn't mind which vehicle I chose, because I've been using that dealer for decades and I know they wouldn't sell me junk. They also gave me all prior service history on the truck, which was a huge bonus.
So after driving it 1,500 miles so far, it is one heck of a truck! I don't mind the DEF, even though it adds to the cost of driving it. The mileage on the EcoD is insane. I've been getting 29-31 mpg!
Only thing that makes me upset is the fact that Stellantis/FCA stopped the EcoD engine to go electric/hybrid. I don't like the new Hurricane gas engine, because to get the true performance out of it, you'd need to run premium gasoline, and where I live, premium is more expensive than diesel.
While I know it's not the same as a Cummins engine, I feel like I made a solid choice on getting the Gen 3 EcoDiesel engine based on the research I did. I really liked the feel of both platforms. I wish I could've bought both the Cummins and the EcoD.
I'm just waiting to get the newly designed CP4 popped into my truck, whenever that'll be. I was last told end of second quarter of 2023 Stellantis is supposed to be sending out information to owners. When I went to get the OEM trailer brake controller installed at the dealer two weeks ago, I was chatting with the service manager and they told me that Stellantis started sending out the new CP4 pumps to install in 2023 new trucks (still on dealer lots/unsold trucks/Jeeps) to green light them to sell. My dealer didn't have any 2023 EcoD's stuck on lot, so it didn't apply to them. From what I can tell on other forums, they were correct, I'm seeing some fresh 2023 EcoD owners.
Now back to being a diesel vehicle owner again, I'm very happy.
Oh, and for what it's worth I am not going back to gasoline or electric/hybrid ever again. I just don't like the driving aspect of either fuel type. I just prefer diesel trucks.
